Janson
i did this the other day. i bought caustic soda in powder form. i mixed it 1 part with 3 parts of warm water, stirring the powder in. should be a bit of smoke/fumes from it, so do wear something over your mouth and nose if you wanna take long, and glasses and gloves to prevent your eyes/hands coming off.then just dip whatever you wanna strip into the liquid. it should develop more smoke, and eventually, the colour will come off with a nice sizzling sound. you can brush the colour off if it won't come off after a little while. Danny
Random Fact: I know a guy that used to run a metal/wood stripping business using caustic soda until one day he bent over to get something out the tank (bearing in mind this is a big tank to fit door etc in) and fell in he spent months in hospital but is ok now thank god. So watch out kiddies its dangerous stuff

TheMunn
So would I just pour some over something like handlebars or something long thats hard to fit into containers etc. ?
Janson
pouring it over won't work very well, needs to be in the liquid for 10-30 seconds...

TheMunn
So what would I have to put it in ? A metal tin or something ? Maybe glass ?
ogre
Does it strip any kind of paint/varnish or whatever else your bike has on it then?
djb
So what would I have to put it in ? A metal tin or something ? Maybe glass ?Your best bet is to put it in something glass but as long as you don't leave it for too long a plastic container would be ok. Leaving caustic in anything for any length of time will cause damage, it'll even etch glass if strong enough!Does it strip any kind of paint/varnish or whatever else your bike has on it then?It probably would strip off other paints/varnishes but your better off using paint stripper for those. Something that's been anodised has a small layer of aluminium oxide (usually dyed pretty colours) covering it designed to prevent corrosion of the aluminium alloy below. Caustic dissolves the aluminium oxide and is one of the only readily available substances that will. The only problem is if you leave it on too long it will also dissolve the alloy, though this would take ages.

TheMunn
Another bump for this topic but if I when you do this to something what kind of finish would it leave ? If I wanted a silver/chrome finish would I have to wet'n'dry afterwards ? Thanks for all the help guys.
Janson
it leaves a kind of dull silver finish, but still a little bit shiny.get the fine grit paper out, get all the small scratches, then go for the polish and a lot of time..
