steve huddo
single speed is it good or not
mat hudson
unless you want to ride comps or change gears alot then yes. its less hassle, lighter and looks cleaner. the only problem is finding a decent chain tensioner. i think most people just use old shortcage mechs. Joe_Kearney
I prefer singlespeed because it looks a lot better (in my opinion) and less can go wrong, such as there will be no gear cables snapping at the worst possible time. Also singlespeed saves weight.
!aNT!
there is a thing called a chain link remover, as chain tensioners tend to have the same problem as rear mechs, as the go bang when you land wrongly...i did n it works
adamtrials
I personally hate singlespeed, its rubbish having your bike stuck in a stupid low gear so ittakes ages to ride anywhere. However i know that a lot of people do like singlespeed, might just be me... luccosleeps
gears are great becoz u can use them for different situations i.e. easy gears for rop hopping etc and heavier gears for mahoosive gaps and jumps, plus weight difference is alot if u buy good equipment. the judge
i like gears, my mod used to really p**s me off riding to a spot, much prefer my new stock with gears
mat hudson
i dont think some of you up there get what i was saying up there. you cant take enough links out to get perfect tension. the chain will either not fit or be far too loose. you will have to run a deraliur or tensioner unless you have horizontal dropouts and this is unlikley on a stock. zoo
I have had a go of bikes with gears and without and i can honestly say without gears with no tensioners is ace, makes the bike feel like a big mod, very impressed I personally find gears get in the way, especially the shifters.zoo
Tom Booth
That bt is running on a white industries excentric hub, meaning chain tesnion can be acheived by the axle on an offset.I used to run single speed.it was great at first...But then i got sick of riding everywhere in a low gear... so i thought id jump back on the gears badwagon..And im soo glad i did.Im running a cassette made of 19-18-17-16-15-14-13-12, A tiagra supershort cage mech, and a shiman trigger shifter. Gears are the Easiest thing to set up, asong as you stick to the recomended parts. With thiss casette i have gearing for most situations and it looks quite good i think, i Just need to cut my frame - mech cable outer down then it will look better Tom
