Cheap, >1 Litre Car To Drive To Mongolia?

Maybe try and find out what the bulk of the cars are in the regions you're going to, just in case you need any spares? Cheap cars tend to be cheap for a reason, so make sure you pick one that's not about to shit the bed or anything. Check the mpg too ;)

I assume you want a 1litre for insurance purposes? What about a French diesel, my Citroen BX 1.9TD is the same insurance group as my old Fiesta so its cheap to insure.

French diesels last forever, i'm on 200k so far (Y) and over the distance you want to go i would imagine the diesel would make a big cost difference. Also the tank is massive, whereas something like a Fiesta or other 1litre car will only have a tiny tank so you will have to stop more frequently

Morris minor?

It's like a mecchano set, ridiculously easy to work on. Get it all serviced nicely and she'll be economical and go for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaages withouht work.

Really cheap to insure too with it being a classic (tax exempt too) and it's a 1litre.

in a similar vein a citreon 2cv?

one of the old skoda/ladas, or one of the new skodas for that matter.

mk1/2 golf (any probs when going through europe and the parts will be readily available)

vw beetle

of course theres always a mini, estate preferably so you can fit a couple of petrol cans in it.

not sure of the engine size, but an old army jeep, or landrover.

one of the old toyota pickups like they tried to kill on topgear, they have proved they go forever no matter what you put them through!!

1) for fun, and to raise money for charity

2) 22nd july for 3 - 4 weeks

3) nope :ermm:

4) Yes, but you will need your own car and ideally one other person to come along with you.

Ta for the responses, were looking at a polo at the moment for £450. Id personally like to go in a mini estate cos it'd be nice and roomy and pretty fun to drive (and ive always wanted one). We really need something easily fix/bodgeable so the older/more reliable the better Im guessing - none of us have ever done mechanics further than putting bikes together.

looking through that website that looks awsome i reckon that would be shite loads of fun and totally different to anything else people will more than likely do in there lives.

id be well up for that.

f**king yeah! In a few years time, i'll be well down for this. Reading their site is so funny.

Will I definately get to Mongolia?

No, what would be the point of that?

Is it safe?

No, of course it's not safe. We will be driving through some very remote places in wholly unsuitable cars with no support system. If you want safety guarantees there are plenty of package holidays to the Isle of Wight.

Awesome.

Good luck with it Tom. :)

998cc mini, and mod it up rally style, could prob be found cheapish (Y)

Fraid not, minis although very nice, are a bit too expensive for this. to get a mini capable of doing the event before falling apart would need more money than they want to spend i reckon. Although it would be easy to fix on the way, good fun, and they are usually reliable once youve sorted any outstanding problems.

As a couple of people have mentioned, a 4x4 fiat panda, they would be perfect. Im pretty sure my dads got one in andorra, dunno if he want to keep it, but needs new doors, they are rusted and one was broken into. other wise i think it just needs a service and it should be ok to go. i will see after new year whether its still there, and if theres any way of getting it back (has been standing for a year or so), i may even be able to give it to you for free, but it will need work doing to it!

Fred, it would definately have to be the uno, and i think even that may have some computer management in it, but it needs to be as simple as possible, incase anything goes wrong.
