Which Front Disc To Buy

I swear by my Avid Mechanical.

Add an awsome XTR lever, use some nice outer (XTR, nokon etc...) and set up the brake as shown in the instructions and you cant go wrong. It only takes about 5-10 mins to set up and beds in just as quickly as any other disk brake.

The brake has shed loads of adjustment. You just use the red dial on the caliper for the main adjustment then make fine adjustments with the barrel adjuster until you get the lever feel and bite point you want :)

Im sure I will be out on a ride with you soon Adrian, if you want to play around with the brake just say (Y)

the avid mech is a good brake BUT I find they dont last long, the dials com off, the arms snap and they are heavy.

I went on my shops enduro testbike the other day, that had juicy 7s, they were pretty dam good, but they did have a 200mm rotor., the lever is amazing, but the return feel is a bit vague.

I also dont like the way the hose goes into the caliper on the side with a 90degre connection, they are very vunerable to hits.

I have to say my fave disks are maguras, they are simple, light, powerful and reliable. The hose goes directly in the top, so not much chance of hitting it and getting oil all over your pads and disk.

They also take mineral oil which is good for the enviroment and it also means you only need one tub for both brakes.

They also have most possiblitys of upgrading, xt or rb levers, different pads (like monty and plazmatic).

You can normally find them on ebay for pretty cheap too :)

You forgot to mention how much you love the marta :P:D

Yeah maggy discs are very good. But avid BB7 is also very good. In terms of power I think the hydraulics may just win, however they can be a bit fiddly and if you don't know what your doing, a real arse pain if things go wrong.

My 203mm BB7 has only slipped slightly once but I think that was cos my fingers were cold :ermm::D

If your on your 2nd one...., that doesn't really put a good name for it, as your old one would have broken or something?

I love my Avid BB7, but i spilt petrol on it and now it's all crap, hehehe :$

I want a Avid Juicy 7 though, look really nice.

He's dam right.

I run mine with a standard halfords cable all lubed up a 185 rotor on my mod and a random avid7 lever and its super awsome one of the best brakes out of our group of riders id say :o .

Avid for the win !

I agree, the Avid is HEAVY compared to anything hydraulic, the calipers are really heavy.

I also agree the Avid doesnt like being hit against stuff. The red dials are exposed and can get damaged easily on sidehops/bails etc... If you properly hit the moving arm on the caliper you could do some serious damage (I snapped the internal cam on mine mullering the caliper down on a rock, the brake had suffered a good 6 months of heavy abuse from me learning sidehops before this though).

But at the end of the day, if you do break the caliper its only £40-£50 for a new Avid Mecahnical (rotor/caliper/pad, so you end up with a spare disk and pads aswell!). You will already have a nice lever, the outer should be good for a while aswell, so its in all fairness it a cheap breakage.

I am debating whether to get a Juicy 7 or a BB7. I had a BB7 on my bike that was stolen and that was amazing, but I can't help feeling that the Juicy really should be loads better since it is Avid's flagship brake, and it's a fair bit more expensive. To be honest, I was perfectly happy with the BB7, but I want a Juicy for the nicer lever feel of a hydraulic. So, is Juicy better than a BB7? I mean is it more POWERFUL, I can't understand people that like their brakes to have modulation instead of power - which is basically my experience of Magura disc brakes. If it's got less power but more modulation I don't really want it. I could just get a BB7, but I have money burning a hole in my pocket and want the bling, really :$

So yeah: Juicy 7 or BB7?

I have ridden Dan Campbels and Peter Haydons Avid mechanical disk brakes.

They are scary powerful with an XTR lever.

I run a v brake,,,,,,,but if i was going to convert to disc, i wouldnt bother with hydraulic.

They are sharp/scary. The power is way better than a hope mini.

And a lot simpler than a fluid break.

Just my honest thoughts

Although none of the breaks mentioned in this thread are bad!

Haha, you're right really. Just wanted to check it wasn't any worse than my BB7. Having said that I have tried BB7s that were nowhere near as powerful as mine, so I guess there's a bit of variation in them anyway... Oh well, I already ordered one off On-One anyway

mono trial all day long.

you just need to take a time out and sort yours out, i have had mine sometimes feel crap but its usually after iv completly written off a disc :P best thing to do is fully take brake off your bike and bleed it up, check pads arent contaminated and clean disc up then put back on. reset the brake and then go find a bit of mud and rub it into the disc ride around dragging on for a few minutes then get down to some trials action and it will be spot on.
