Know Your Limits

There will always be someone bigger, better, younger, more attractive than you. Doing big side hops or whatever are great, but one shouldn't base a whole career around that fact. Because as soon as you lose that position, where are you left?

I think it's really sad that this is what trials seems to have become.

Think about singing. There are some people with some insanely large ranges singing pretty much any note thrown at them. That's all they practice, going higher and higher and higher. To them that's what singing is all about. It's impressive, but it's boring!

Some of the best singers don't have the best technique and don't even have much of a range, but they are a damn site more interesting to listen to. Singing should be about the song.

I think the same with trials. I watch a lot of these videos from the big names I see dallied around here, and I find it usually quite boring to watch. As soon as you've seen one side hop and one drop gap, you've seen them all! Filling a whole video with them is just like listening someone sing high notes for 15 minutes.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, who cares about the limits? Make trials more interesting.

I think that in the future all trials bikes will look like this. Sidehops will reach upto around 80 inches using the 350mm bb rise and the bouncy ball compound rear tyre. Trials riders will only eat pastys to gain ultimate power for extreme maneuvers. This bb rise will allow for hooks on over vertical walls and also allow entire comp sections to be just ridden straight over leaving all the trials pros with scores of 0.

This is my drink fueled idea, and i would 'laugh my ass off' if it ever happened.

Absolute class. Thats ace.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trials motocross uses suspension to good effect.

but they have engines....

if you put suspension on a trials mountain bike you arent going to help anything. you loose energy in the spring and dampening system.... upshot you aint going up anything big. Man = less than 1 BHP ... Engine = plenty more than 1BHP.

totally agree with will here - people will just start being more inventive/techy/linking moves together and stuff

of coruse there is the 'holy grail' of trials tricks - back/front flip drops too

and i reckon we could be seeing tailwhip drops soon too...

I was thinking of that too! Well.......tailwhip gaps am telling I think it's possible. Nice decent run up, then lift and do a tailwhip and hopefully land on back wheel when the bike comes rounds B)

ashton was saying somthing to me at the bikeshow, he said somthing like he almost or did land a tailwhip sidehop drop on his 24"

It was a while ago, so my memory is a bit fuzzled.

I know theres loads of stuff I wanna learn, including no footers, no handers, bar spins, tailwhips etc.......I doubt I'll ever land any though :P

If you watch my 8ft drop bail, the reason I bailed the second time was because I threw the barspin in too late (N)

i agree with this. street trials, with all the spins and x-ups is coming back, more and more people are doing it, eventually that will get boring too. but we will find something more impressive, creative and harder to master. alot of street riders i know of (me included) are considering a more compy style, just to get those few more inches, technical riding is good, huge riding is good but a varity of both is the key, just look at aggrid and ashton.

i agree ash, street trials is coming back, but i see the only way for trials to get big, is for it to be cool

people need to see it, and think, yeah! i wana do that, i dont like all this sidehops, taps and shite, it is amazing how big some people can go now, but it is so repetitve watching a video with 15sidehops, and 10 taps

it just gets boring! trials should be well more interesting to the public, and everyone,

i remember at the base bikes tryouts, dj doing a crankflip of that skip (those who were there wil remember, oct 2003), and also that 180 he did of the skip, was insane back then, barely anyonedoes that now, what happened to being creative, and learning all these tech tricks

we argue alot about the difference in styles in trials, from long low and silver to fast and agressive, trials is growing apart from itsself. i dont really like 'trials' anymore. i think its shit, but i love riding street, trying to invent new moves, and linking different stuff together, trying new things, i hate the way trials is now, it was just so much more fun two years ago.

personally i dont see myself as a trials rider anymore, i just mess around having fun, doing what i enjoy, and what i think 'looks' cool on a bike.

even having no seat, people walk past and say, 'whats that, a kids bike your riding' where's you seat, people need to be able to relate to it, and see it as a cool sport, or its just going to go know where.

rant over, piss on my bomfire all you guys want, i dont care,

I read the last post!

I cant quote for some reason?

We are all moving on! Dont hate trials?

I love hopping around. And i love fluid bmx moves.

I love it all.

Its all going to blend into one thing eventualy!

ie seeing what can be done on two wheels!

just have fun for now! if u enjoy linking street moves , go for it!

I like watching/riding all styles.

why make it a stress? we only do it for fun.

Some people have to worry about the next meal on the table!

See what i'm getting at. The 'sidehop record' will always get bigger, it will never stop. Even if someone does a sidehop 1mm bigger than someones record 10 years ago, it's still betting bigger.

yeah - easy, ive nearly got em down on the ground. ive ridden out of a few now - sure it isnt good for my hoses though.

- on a related note.... the f-set people have figured out gyros for hydraulic brakes now

lmao ^_^

I WANT ONE!

i think there will be no limits to what is acheiveable...( apart from what technology is available for companies to develop )

there will be times when nothing new happens and everyone will be riding on the same level... but... somthing new will always come along that will blow our minds. ^_^

cheers for the yap,

bill :)

Street riders will be fine for ALONG while yet as there focus is on creativity. :shifty: so moves can be made into combos (like thps) and more moves 'created'

BUT

for riders whos main emphasis is on size, like me. tunni. porter. cls. fletch. wheeler and foster ect ect i think will start to reach major bonderies.

i think the size will stop at around these below figures:

57"sidehops for stock, around 60" for mod

62" ish taps

10ft static gaps

around 18ft drops

68" hooks

as imo it will be VERY hard for a human to have the power/strength/explosiveness to gain any more.

i also think the emphasis will gradeually go away from going big but go towards more technical stuff, like you see cls starting to do . think cherrypicking ont rails  .

THE FUTURE OF TRIALS IS GONNA BE AWESOME, BBIIGG moves...:-(Y):):P

62" ish taps

65" bunnyhop on a mod

10ft static gaps

around 22ft drops

75+" hooks

I agree with this ^^ :D.

I swear a lot of our current records can be stretched quite a bit, especially highest bunnyhop, heighest hook (if you look at how heigh Benito was hooking in the koxxdays videos, im sure it was about 70" anyway, and he attempted one which I worked out to be around the 75" mark, but bailed). I think just fear of bailing badly really restricts how much we can do.
