DeeZee
I wanna shorten my chain on my 2005 T-Rex (I'm assuming the chain is shimano). Will I have to buy a replacement chain pin, or can the one I remove be saved? I'm reluctant to try mucking about with a chain, cos I hear so many nasty stories about chain snaps when your 6ft off the deck. But I want to try and bring the mech cage closer to the chain stay. trialsinchris
hi my mates got a 2005 t-rex and he did same with his its not that bad and yes you can reuse pin in your original chain as long as you dont push it all the way out just make look to make sure chain isnt damaged when youve rejoined it again and it shouldnt snap. deanie-b
I'm not been funny dude, But i'm sure you can afford a new pin!And it might be safer in the long run Wiggle says:Chains:Chain length can be adjusted when you fit it but the width has to be correct. 7 and 8-speed chains are the same width but 9-speed ones are narrower, with 10-speed narrower again. Choose the right one to match your gear system. You can use a SRAM (Sachs/Sedis) chain with a Shimano gear system - in fact, most people do! When you join a Shimano chain, you must use a new replacement connecting pin. If you change your chain, you must replace the cassette sprockets at the same time or the new chain will skip over them under load.Ok, It's not to say that not using a pin is impossible, But it will probably help you out Cheers

Dougster
Hi my mate used tie wraps and tied the mech to the frame. This acts like a chain tensioner but you cant change gears. Just find the right gear and your made. Doug
Simpson
If your on what i think your talking about use a split link! i ran 3 at 1 time before that was asking for trouble it wont cause you too much bother if your unsure about re-connecting! shortern it for sure not any effort get someone to tell you how to do it, but a chain tool a fiva maybe?and you chain is going to snap at one time you can make it more or less likely to happen, by not splitting and re-splitting it you reduce the chances of it snapping, its unlucky if its at the top of a drop but shit appens hey!!
