sir trial a lot
hey......... wots the best way 2 put a headset in? Hi, most people use a vice to put one in with blocks of wood to stop damage to the cups, however i use the big pillar drill we have as a press and some people even use a block of wood and a hammer but i wouldnt advise that oh also make damn sure it goes in nice and straight or else it will flare your head tube
Synergy
i would agee with sir trials alot, however my amtes and i have always sued a hammer and a block of wood, if you do it carefully it should be ok but if you still arent sure just go to a bike shop.let me know how you get on. sir trial a lot
How do you do it with a bit of wood an a hammer?sorry about this boys ,Get the bottom of the headstock of the frame on something solid and warm the frame headstock with boiling water to expand it a little bit (to make the headset easier to press in) and place a little grease on the top cup where it goes into the frame. Next place the top cup in its desired place and push it in as much as you can with your fingers. Then get your piece of wood that covers the full area of the cup and hit it on top of the cup. Keep checking that the cup is going in straight on the way down, just take your time. Warm the frame again and repeat all those steps for the bottom cup. Like i say just take your time and be patient. If a cup does tip over a little bit get a smaller bit of wood that can cover the bit that is sitting higher and tap it GENTLY untill it sits straight and then carry on tapping it down with the larger piece of wood. NEVER use a large hammer, just use a medium one so your not forcing/hitting the cup too hard. If there's anything else you need to know just drop me a line and ill do my best to help

andypro1
i made my own headset tool i got a peice of threaded bar and pur two peices of flat steel on it then two nuts.then all you do is tighten the nuts and it pushes the cups in so a bit like using a vice
sir trial a lot
I found using my pillar drill as a press was the easiest but not many people will have one and not everyone on here has a vice. By the sounds of things he hasnt got either because he was asking about the block of wood and hammer technique. Oh well, opinions, opinions

am4zin
so you can use a block of wood and a hammer to get the cups in, but then how would you go about taking the cups out?
sir trial a lot
so you can use a block of wood and a hammer to get the cups in, but then how would you go about taking the cups out?the popular one for that is a large screw driver and a hammer but some people cut a piece of metal so theres 4 bits on the end and pull them out. you then pull it through your headtube and when it springs in behind the headset cup you can hit your cup out with the metal
BASETA26ER
there's two way the neat and tidy way is to get abit of threaded bar with a nut on one end then a rather big washer what will fit over the bearing cup's then the opposite on the other side then tighten the nuts so that then it will pust the bearing cups in to the frame, it takes a wile but it costs basically nothing and it doesn't scratch anything/ damage anything but then again theres the other way which people have been saying hammer and a bit of wood, does the job but not the best of ways.. hope ive helped.. marc
