Thom
ok right now I've got mavic ex721 and as everyone knows they're not the widest of rims. So I'm planning on getting a wider rim, but the thing is I can't have it too wide or else it might cause a few problems with my v brakes. DX32 is impossible to get over and there is no onza dealer so they're out of the question. I can get echo, mavic, sun quite easily. This is what I had in mind: Because the new front echo rims are 38mm, i was thinking of running this as a rear. Do you think it'll hold up? What about running a mavic d321/ex729 ? 36mm wide and everyone knows the metal mavic uses rocks. Problem is its a disk only rim with JUST enough room for rim brakes. But I know that a few people on here have used it with rim brakes and have said it works (a few have also said it sucks). A bit dodgy but if it works it's probably the best option since mavic rims are hella strong. If anyone has done this please comment. I can also get the sun kingpin which is 34mm. Its hefty though at 880g and 34mm is not really that wide. rim brake rim though so thats a plus. So those were what i was considering if anyone has any other suggestions for rims that'll be great. Oh and i dont think I can get tioga either? do they even still make the DH rim.
mat hudson
join two mavic rims together. fat mike and ali c both did this and i know fat mike was particualrley pleased. try tracking him down for info on what rims to use, how to do it etc.
MaXsteri
I ran a ex729 for a while with hs33's. It worked okay but i couldn't help thinking i was loosing a fair bit of braking performance as less than half the pad was hitting the rim, and it made a mess of my pads when they wore into funny shapes. If you can get one cheap then have a try for yourself, but if your buying retail then i would probably just go for a different rim to start with. Will Arnold
hows about using a sun doublewide? just grind the braking surface :) it has been done and isn't too bad :)
Thom
Thanks for the replies. I really can't afford to ruin pads so I guess the mavic is out of the question but the doublewide doesn't seem bad just worried about the angled surface though. How was the pad wear WILL? Trials Dave
i dont think your idea about running a front echo as a rear isnt too bad an idea. i'm not sure how strong it would be because i dont have one myself but im sure someone who has an echo rim would be happy to tell you how strong they are. :P
MaXsteri
I have the new echo rims, as do a few people now. But couldn't really give you any idea of how well it would hold up on the back as i don't do anything big to the front. From a quick look it looks to be the same construction as the rear only narrower
trialswannabe
Why not a mavic 721. There a dh rim and designed for rim brakes Edited December 7, 2005 by trialswannabe

Lawnmowerman
Tioga rims are good and alot wider than mavics
Thom
yeah the mavic is strong but its just not wide enough. I don't think I can get tioga over here and I'm not sure if they even make them anymore, thanks though. MaXsteri, do you have a grind on your front echo ? if you do does it hold well ? I think the best option right now is the echo...

MrsMonkey
If you can get Echo bits then don't get the new Echo front rim but see if you can get the slighly older Echo CNC rear rim! That's about the width you're after and will probably be much more suitable than the front one youre' looking at. x Dani x
breedy13
as the dude said above the echo 05 cnc rear looks a good choice or a planet x bmf (38mm) or lmf (32mm) may b worth loking at i've had my bmf for a few years and its holds a grind a treat.
