Rich Pearson
A lot of people have a lot of different reasons for not wanting to do comps. They either can't be bothered and just enjoy 'free' riding (you know what I mean), which is fair enough. Some of the best riders in the UK like Matt Berridge and James Porter have made names for themselves doing almost no comps at all (apart from Porter who's just taken it up again and is comfortably caining me....) Many people don't like the rules and obeying them, or feel that the conditions of a competition are too restrictive to an individuals style as you just have to get through the sections and get out the end, so even if you pull a lovely crankspin or an X-up mid section, its makes sweet FA differnece if you didn't get through the section (there was an idea about Fluffy Bunny Points, but thats another story...) And in that light, some people don't like being put under the pressure of riding a comp. I remember being scared shitless when I was riding beginner because I looked so crap in comparison to someone like Chris Doney or Mike Graves, who were flying through sections much harder than what I was doing (its even more embarresing that I'm nearly two years older than Chris aswell!) and now I ride in the same category as those two. They still run rings all around me but thats not the point! And yeah, I never went to comps because where I lived there just weren't any! The big well organised comps (Hampshire, Essex, DJ, etc...) are all a long way apart and for some people it can be several hours drive which many people just cannot afford. (I personally enjoy getting up early on Sundays to drive for three hours to a comp, but thats just me...) So anyway, the important point is that you should neither let any of the above reasons stop you attending comps nor feel obliged to enter them. Competitions are only one way of testing the skills of a rider, but there are others, and its how you find the best way to present that skill that'll make it happen. (Y) Apologies for the mini essay! I just have absolutely nothing better to do..... Rich Edited December 6, 2005 by karsonlevoret
MaXsteri
I don't because (in this order): 1: I don't consider myself good enough 2: I haven't a clue where the nearest comp would be 3: The six gear rule
Rich Pearson
I don't because (in this order): 1: I don't consider myself good enough 2: I haven't a clue where the nearest comp would be 3: The six gear rule 1. Many people attend comps who cannot even bunnyhop or trackstand reliably. I've seen them leave with a smile on their face and come back for the next one. 2. From Eastbourne I'd say Essex and Hampshire were roughly of equal distance away. Can't think of anywhere closer than that, but then its about the same distance for when I drive to a hampshire comp from Taunton. Their contact details can be found at http://www.biketrialuk.co.uk/ 3. Only applies to Nationals (to my knowledge.) JT!
3: The six gear rule Yeah, there's very little rules in your bog standard comp in regards to your bike. SS is fine. I don't goto comps mainly becuase the weather is generaly crap. And if the weather isn't crap, there's a section though a small stream. And i don't want to have to pay the initial costs just to goto the one or two good weather ones. And then the second point is just getting there. Which is a bitch. Which is a bitch. 1) i ran SS in comp other day, as did about 95% of other riders :) 2) thats what this forum is for http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/index.php?showforum=25 (News Forum)... then train or try to tag along with some1 else, lifts can be arranged in some cases, we're all 1 big trials family :) Edited December 6, 2005 by street trials rider

Ali C
I doubt I would ride if I didnt do comps, I just really enjoy them.........even out riding normally I make rules I have to follow, like pretend there is tape and I am only allowed to touch cirten things, or not allowed to stop or do everythin g left foot. I love rules!! I dont think I have ever been nervous at a comp from people watching me, only from the thought falling off and messing up my chance of winning. I am lucky and there are comps local, my parents took me to them for years but they dont go as much now that I have friends that drive (and I can drive myself there when I get a working car :) ) The most fun comps though are the nationals, I love them

stevecoust
hello all. i was just wondering why some people wont try comps. is it cause u cant get there or u just like street or what ? cheers andy :) hi, its probably because a number of reasons:they are pure street riders and couldent cut it at natural, they cant catch a ride there, they dont know what class they would be in and be scared they would do badly. :D steve :)
