theone2be
I'm not shure if this is a stupid question, all though I run a formula 100 rear disc (well just bought the bike with it on so i havn't ridden it), and im allready thinking for upgrading to a hope mono trials. So i thought i'd come online and ask people how they got on with a rear hope mono trials, one problem.... there isnt any! Why don't many (if any) trials riders run a rear disc?? Is there problems with them, and what makes them different from rim maggies thanks
tipsy Jock
Main problem is they break frames and don't have as positive a feel as a rim brake does. Although some frames can take it like the new leeson, Brisa and megamo equip. Some riders get along with them though
monkey gav
if you side hop to your disk side there is a very large risk of landing on your disk
Matt_Tupman
if you side hop to your disk side there is a very large risk of landing on your disk But only the same risk as side hoping to a mech or tesioner I'm running a rear disc now on my Tibo and i love it but who knows how long the frame will last, i think with the power or discs ever increascing we will see a lot more riders going to rear disc and once more riders do the frame manufactures will notice this and then produce mounts to suite our needs. Now it's bedded in it is spot on. It has obvious plus sides, as in the wet. (Y)
fairy elephants
I fitted my rear hope mono trial yesterday after finding the front one to be absolutly amazing... at the moment it is pretty poop due to only riding it on the curb outside my house. But after a couple of proper rides, i'm sure it will perform well :) Like people have already said, the main reason people dont use them is because the frame's cant take the force. Mr Motivator
1. They rip off the frame disk mounts 2. There is no where near enough hold 3. There is very little bite

Ali C
I had a rear 160mm mono trials on my 26" global. It was ok, I liked the constant lever feel, modulation and quietness but it didnt have anywhere near the hold I needed, I ended up on my ass (ask waynio (Y) ) Also spoke flex makes the bike feel a bit vague and I sidehop mainly to my left and would rather not have a disk to bend. As things are at the mo I dont think disk technology is up to a rear disk on 26" bikes, the disks need to be smaller, thicker and more intregated into the wheel....calipers also need to be more designed as part of the frame, rather than a later add on. Rich Pearson
if you side hop to your disk side there is a very large risk of landing on your disk You have to land INCREADIBLY hard on a disc rotor to bend it enough that it is unusable. Believe me, I've tried. Most bent rotors can be repaired using a an adjustable spanner on the spot. 1. They rip off the frame disk mounts 2. There is no where near enough hold 3. There is very little bite 1. Only on frames that have been poorly designed where a disc mount has been slapped on as an afterthought. 2. There is lots of hold if you set the brakes up properly. I'm not joking, I havn't had a brake that has held better than my Avid rear disc. 3. Again, if et up properly, a rear disc can bite harder and more effectively than a magura. As things are at the mo I dont think disk technology is up to a rear disk on 26" bikes, the disks need to be smaller, thicker and more intregated into the wheel....calipers also need to be more designed as part of the frame, rather than a later add on. i'll second that. the smaller discs actually seem to work more efficiently, and I can definately see manufacturers putting more money into rear discs now that more people have started using them.
