Mark W
The concept of Black/Asian/Other non-white racial type Awards is, in my opinion, a racist one. Do you want the Country music awards banned? And Metal Hammer's awards ceremony? And all the other sub genre's music awards? Asian music has a totally different cultural background and therefore a totally different sound to any other music, so it IS a different type of music. It's not because they're seperate, it's 'cos the music IS different. So saying that's racist is kinda taking it out of context totally? Same as Indian music is different, in terms of usage of different instruments entirely?
Tomm
Well call it by what it is actually called then. I'm sure indian genres of music have their own name. And not just pushing under a big umbrella of "music made by people who aren't white" aka Black music.
delusional
Ok that doesn't mean anything, but my point is that "black" people aren't actually black which basically goes against your argument. But anyway, I'm just being obtuse. If the English language is so inherently racist, are other languages different in their use of colours as descriptions? Neither are white people actually white... however, our language has chosen to label black people as black, and as I'm talking about representations in language I think that's more important than the reality of peoples skin colour. I'd say brown is a bit of an enigma in this situation though - on one side it connotes earth, nature and growth; and on the other it connotes dirtyness and grime. I shit ye not, I just had to look up the definition of connotation about an hour ago (was fairly sure about it, just needed clarification). Just starting an essay on semiotics.. you seem to know your shit. Fancy coming over and helping me out? :P Anyway, not much to say as im no longer getting involved in this, just the coincidence of me having to write an essay about this kinda thing and you putting it into practice was too huge to not mention. Now that sentence is a prime example of why i'm no good at essays :turned: I only studied semiotics briefly about a month ago, I really enjoyed it (along with pretty much everything else I've studied in a similar vein). I don't know it that well though, I'm just able to talk in a way that makes it sound like I do! This is the second time I've had the opportunity to use it in some form of online debate. It makes me happy that my education is helping me achieve something :D
Mark W
Nice to see those tuition fees going towards something (Y) Still, you have no idea how tempting it is to change the last word of your quote to "Incontinent" (Y)
andyroo
The thing is, its not like the labels "black" and "white are just terms used by white people... black people also use these terms because they work... MOBO does not stand for, "Music of Brown Origin" does it? The term "black" in relation to people with dark skin was, as far as I'm aware, first used by the spanish. Thyre word for black is "negro". Now the spanish word for black is a very racsist word. And it's not like the spanish are all that pale either, yet they are still white people... but they don't have a problem with that term, and neither should black people have a problem with the term black, as long as negativity is twined with the terms, i.e: hes an idiot BECAUSE he is black... It's all a fuss made by a minority, to be honest from what experience, most black people couldn't give two hoots about being labelled as black, just as I and many others don't care about being called white. As for the connotations of black an white, it's not done as something purposeful to upset black people, black is (for obvious reasons) associated ith the dark, night time, where you are unaware of your immeadiate surroundings, which invokes fear... and fear is associated with evil... The same goes for white, white is light, happiness, peace and security... How many people here are afraid of the dark.... how many of those people are afraid of black people for the same reasons they are afraid of the dark? Yeah. Jay Jay
Why do black comedians get away with 'white people' jokes when Roy Chubby Brown gets slandered for 'white and non white people jokes'? mat hudson
because we dont care about racism to us, we just have to put up with it, and after the oppresion black people got, they needed to feel like they could do/say what they wanted.
