skandy32
A glorious winters day (when expecting snow) gave me more motivation than ever to ride. Reminding myself not to go too big, because i had a bit of a buggered chain (snapped the night before, and i 'repaired' it just for todays ride), i was happyly enjoying smaller streety bits of trials. Before long, with the nice cold sea breeze settling in early afternoon. we reached "old Portsmouth", a popular and well known trials playground. Spice island was all good and my chain still strong. A extremely cold wind too! A nice big fat greesy cheeseburger with chips warmed me up on our way towards clarence pier ish. Mid journey, we briefly stop off at that famous archway drop, with that nice gap too. Locals will know the one - heres a pic of me in mid flight infact....... Still quite chilly and in desperate need for some adrenalin i veture up to the top, couple of 8ft drops later, people are still standing around with they're warm hoodies on. So i thought " why not, lets try the 10fter ontop of the archway". Few got they're cameras out. all was well, last minute check of all my chain links gave me the confidence. Imagine yourself in my shoes..... trackstanding nervously, yank up the front wheel, i slowly gap concentrating soooo hard to the edge, for a brief second everthing goes slow, i have all the time in the world to perfect this manouvue (sp!). Tuck my bum down real good, lower the front end slowly, and gap..... :'( ...... the new tar i put on a few mins ago sticks that little bit too much, almost as if my brake locks for a second too long. Instead of being a slow carefull drop - its suddenly turned into the quickest panicy riding of my life. i launch forward more than down unexpectidley, all is well and recovered - chain was ok! Until i hit the deck. So quick i dont remember. (But looking at the scenario afterwards it went something like.....) BB snaps on the right side, that foot lands safely on concrete sandwiching my right pedal. The left foot on the other hand ( he he good punn :'( ) takes all my body wieght still on the pedal. The bike falls to one side. i walk off it as if i fell down a couple inch high curb, bugger. I wonder round insisting nothing hurts, and im just shivering with the cold. I look back at my bike in amonsgt the crowd of ashtonished fellow riders, the crank completely seperate from the bike. And the wheel, oh my..... Having never really broken any trialsy parts before, and barely even straightened this wheel, even though i've done many drops before, this was amazing. EGG, kinda spells it out, half the spokes as loose as string, one side just flat. And woudlnt roll through the maggy any more ;) . Chain was all ok though! :( To show my pain i drew a little picture of where it all hurts.... orange = sore red = inscrewsheee-aating pain and heres a couple of snaps ( another punn :) ) of the amazing equipment i used...... Moral of the story - *shrugs shoulders* maybe dont bother going to A and E for 3hours unless theres lots of blood and sticky outy bits!? Anyone recommend a new rim or bb? lol

PaRtZ
jesus.... You were a lucky b*stard to walk away from that... I've had a few incidents of uber sticky tar but not from 10ft. Grats for rescuing the drop and not faceplanting though :'( Hope you get better soon and do it again :'(
Phatmike
Video? :'( And I've seen had rims a lot worse than that. :'( Least you're largely ok.
T-Limburn
andy i thought your ten foot drop to grass in IOW was crazy, and now you go and do it to concrete!!! good effort mate (apart from the broken parts) when you did the 10ft drop four times in IOW everyone was confused at why your bb and bb were still holding up - but i think we can say they finally gave way! Felix
Moral of the story Drops are pointless and kill you and your bike. :'(
Rob_P
Fair play mate, 10fts big! I'd never have the balls to do 10ft, barely 7ft to be honest. Dont really like drops, for that exact reason ;) Love stories like this, thought it was just gonna be the drop, o no scrolled down HAHA, that drawing as well :'( :'(

Luke Drewery
Moral of the story, dont use tar! Grind your rim then your brake wont stick and will work better anyway! That's harsh though, Im not a fan of drops for the reason you just explained to us, they are risky and kill your bike if you go wrong! (Y)
Houseface
unlucky, thought people falling 10ft would have hurt much more. amazed how the bb snapped (Y) looks bad in the pic (Y) steve.
petit_pablo
Moral of the story, dont use tar! Grind your rim then your brake wont stick and will work better anyway! Exactly what i was going to say. Ive had near misses using tar a few years back. Id rather ride with a smooth rim rather than tar these days 10/10 for actually landing the drop though and not faceplanting from up there. You wouldnt be riding for a long time if you had
guineasmithpig
lucky git i snapped a bb in may off a 7ft drop. put me out for bout 4 moths gettin me ankle sorted out. just ridin again now (or tryin to). i kinda went off doin big drops a while back. far to damaging to both ur bike and ur health. good effort though smithy

skandy32
Crazy, what bb was that lol? and XT jobby  brought just one week beforehand, (the day i went to the IOW doing big drops too). Didnt last long. If anyones interested.... the parts im replacing the broken bits with look like a raceface expensive bb - either the 40 or 80 quid fancy annodised ones (not that anyone can see your bb!!). And the wheel should be being built up by tarty soon with a new ronnie rim and GRIND this time - no more tar!! cheers for all the response guys! i've learnt my lesson ( i think ), he he
