Hope Xc Axle Removal

Evening all :P

After much deliberation, Im going to avoid getting a king as i cant justify the cost for my riding level. So im going to settle for a hope xc and be extremely happy. But the only let down from the xc is the QR axle, So im thinking of running a m6x1.0 tap down each end and running a bolt up axle.

But one thing is how easy is it to remove the axle from an xc? Is it pull the freehub off then it comes out of the hub like most other 2 sealed bearing hubs? like the front xc's? or is there more to it then this?

Cheers for any help in advance

If you want to get the rear axle out just take the cassette body off, then all you need to do is support the hub shell, with something like the shape of a roll of parcel tape, then with a leather mallet hit the axle out, you will have the other side bearing cover and bearing on, I would advise you not to take these off at it's a pain to set the axle up again getting it centred in the hub.

so the other bearing stays in the shell? if so phew :P i hate putting bearings back in, what if i marked on the axle where it was when it was new, then when putting it back in just put it in till it marks up with the line? Or is it different each time the axle is removed?

erm, y do u need to remove the axle to tap it?

i just lay the wheel down on a vice with the bottom end of the axle held in the jaws. easy as pie.

as for takin it out, just remove the freehub assembly, and bang it out from the non-drive side. but u shudn't need to, just to tap the axle

its not really as easy as banging the axle out and in from the hub, hope make a tool kit that some shops will have that includes bearing drifts and also specially designed seats for the hub to rest on so the axle can be removed in order

these tools are quite important as they stop the cartridge bearings from being damaged when the axle is being removed or inserted

you can try it yourself but it will take alot of time and patience to get right as i'm pretty sure the axle is thicker inside the hub so bearings on one side will get knocked out and need pressed back in

A QR will be bbetter than bolts in the end as you'll likely die if your axle snaps whereas if if it snaps and u have a QR in it then it will be held together, therefore not causing death, just make do with QR's!

Kieron :ermm:

If the axle snaps with bolts in the hub wont fall out either way. It will be held in buy the axle end caps(them thing covering the bearings)

Ahh well, i will see anyway
