Moving On...

Alright guys, was wondering what people thought about this too, probably people who have been going more than 5 years... I think ive been going since I was 11, and now im 19, lol!

As of the last 6 months, pretty much the start of summer, I havent felt like going out on my bike, its just got a bit dull. As a kid I always reckoned that 'yeh, i'll never give up till I die' but now I can see I pretty much have, its weird! Ive still got my bike and all my stuff for if I want to go for a blast, but in my current mindset I dont feel like riding anymore. Im not asking for people to suggest new things for me to try as well, thats not what this post is about, as I dont see the point in trying to force myself to ride for the sake of it!

I guess im just asking what happened to people in this situation, do you gradually get back into it again or have some of you not ridden for like a year!?

Random, open topic, discuss! hehe.

Erm well, i stopped a while ago, yes i admit i still don't ride as much as i used to now, but i managed to get into it a bit more when i started to go out with more people that rode trials, and it gradually got me back into it, seeing other people doing it!

Cheers!

I'm just too lazy to ride, and there's no enthusiasm in it for me.

Don't get me wrong, I love trials, and I love riding my bike, I just can't be arsed going out on it.

Theres nothing good to ride in nairn, and I get frustrated when I can't do something. (not angry, theres a difference)

Yeah pretty much the same for moi. Realised it was pointless riding bmx on a Pashley so bought a bmx last year... now hardly even ride that. Everything kind of went down the poo hole. Oh well.

If I could afford it I'd probably buy a 24" to try and get back into things 'cos I have good memories and I'd like to add to them. But it ain't happening.

dude, I know the feeling well.

Thats why I dont ride much anymore

No motivation, and bored of the same old all the time.

I get more anoyed at everyone trying to label everyone as a certain rider type "oh your soo uci"

Sod that, just rdie and enjoy it.

Im not going to quit, and I wont ride every day, weekend, month.

Ill stop riding when it stops being fun. I tried Comps, no fun, I just want to go out, ride a few lines, hang with mates and have a laugh.

Dont take it too serriously.

Yeah, the labelling sucks. Everyone just getting obsessed with who can do the highest whatever. It's stupid. The number of times I get told off for having riser bars, or doing street moves. It's just stupid and makes riding boring. I rode BMX most of last winter, and I may well do this winter, but I'm not going to sell my trials bike or anything. Keep my options open.

Me and another trials riding mate have just bought the same bmx. Ive not rode my trials bike for about 3 months now and to be honest havent missed it. Especially with the influence from the bmx, Im enjoying that much more. I learn 3 or 4 brand new things every time i go on it and it feels very exciting etc

I wont be giving it up anytime soon

I absolutely love riding, it gets more fun every time i go out. Couldn't live without it, made loads of new cool friends through riding and really push myself to progress. Iv only been riding about 10 months though so i would say that wouldn't i? lol. But i wouldn't do something i don't enjoy, So if you don't like it, don't do it :P

At the moment, BMX > trials for me simply because it feels like the sky's the limit on BMX. It just seems like the possibilities are endless with BMX, whereas with trials you're generally just learning the same shit then just doing it bigger, basically. With BMX though, there are hugely varying styles of riding that you can really get into, and never really fully explore. If you pick, say, 5 videos from here, and 5 videos from a BMX-forum, the ones here would be the same "tap, gap, sidehop" videos that everyone is doing now, yet the BMX ones could be dirt, flatland, street, pegless streety stuff, park, vert - and so on. There's just so much stuff you can do with it. Brakeless, pegless, whatever. It's just so open and diverse.

Also, I love going somewhere and exploring, and it's just waaaaaaaay nicer ripping through somewhere on a BMX than on a trials bike. Spinning like f**k on a seat-less bike feels sooooooo shit in comparison to a high PSI, slick-tyred bike with high gearing and a seat. It's just much more fun to get around on, pretty much.

But yeah, just try something new, or you may just have come to the natural sorta end to your trialsing life. If you have, that's just the way it is, really. Life beckons, 'n' all.

Yeah, and not once has a BMXer told me I shouldn't have two brakes, or should have pegs, or this, or that. You ride with BMXers, everyone is hitting different things and trying their own stuff. Go on a trials ride and everyone queues to ride the same bit of wall, and the moment someone does something, like a tap, everyone has to copy and do a tap. Everyone just follows each other round to prove themselves, and it does actually get boring.

Well through this thread we have discovered your not the only one feeling this way, infact i am too. What doesnt help is mates who you would normally ride with. Now i dont know but your mates may or may not be riding. This is where the problem started for me.

I stopped riding as often because of work and a relationship, relationship died and work seems to take up a lot of time then having a car also makes you uber damn lazy! Winter is crap for riding so dont threat about that one, cold hands, freezing brakes, the risk of slipping on ice, all makes it easier to say "i cant be assed"

However if your mates are saying go on come out for a ride and really edging you on for it then i have particularly found it adds to a lot of motivation which in turn causes you to get off yo ass and get out to ride. Getting back in touch with old mates etc can be a very good way to get over it.

Im screwed most of my mates dont bother anymore because they are too lazy and Scott@eastcoasttrials.com has sold his damn bike!

Like you have said you dont want to stop because its great to ride but just cant be assed motivation is the key you need to find your way of motivation and hopefully things will pick back up, otherwise just look back at what you achieved and be proud of it.

stu :P

Like you now. Bought a BMX and am loving it. Had it about an month, and i'm learning new things everytime I ride. Not rode the trials bike in about 2 months now, don't really intend to for a while either. Up to you what you do, try BMX, never know, you might really enjoy it :P

when i ride bmx i get slated for having my seat low, having only a rear brake, not having a chrome rim, not keeping my knees together, braking too much, only having two pegs, etc.

local bmxers are a bit of a whiny bunch though.

you could start making movies for a living Ben, Gansters in Paradise was WICKED apart from the sound. :P :)

I think trials, for the most part is quite limited, (read on before you post to disagree :P ).

After 3+ years, i could tap, hop, drop, gap, sidehop etc etc. About the only thing i couldn't do was hook (done it a couple times to bash).

The point, once you have learnt all of the techniques, is to hone them in and improve your heights and distances... To me personally, Improving an inch or so every few months just wasn't enough excitement to make me wanting more, so i suppose i turned to bmx.

A lot of riders are getting extremely good now, to the point where it is incredibly hard to improve, and are now beggining to tire of trials because they can't get much further quickly and it isn't drawing them back so much.

You NEED to be imaginitive and inventive to keep the interest up. Ryan leech for example created his manifesto, which was to elimintae all correction hops in trials to inprove flow and speed. This is a huge challenge and one that you can always work on once you have mastered the techniques.

It still isn't enough for me, But it has worked for him and could for others. I felt that bmx suited me more as there is more fear and danger involved in a lot of it, and once you overcome that, you don't just improve on a current trick, you add a totally new trick to your list forever more. It is a bigger rush landing something totally new for the first time. More so than getting 56" not 53".

Hope you get where i am coming from. If you are bored, either become inventive and imaginitive, or try something new like bmx, where you could use your skills you learnt, but have a fresh apporach to it.

How weird,

I've been out of the whole trials 'thing' for 2(ish) years, purely as I didnt have time and lost interest...

I've just kinda got back into it, riding maybe once every couple of weeks, mainly for the excersize and seeing if I could still do stuff I used to be able to do, I still dont really have a sudden urge to go out on the bike and stuff but I guess the novelty wears off after a few years...

But Ben, dont sell your bike, I'm really glad I haven't (although I did think about it many times). Just incase one day you get that sudden urge to ride, and if that happens and you've got no bike then you'll be gutted that you sold it. (If that makes any sense)

Paul.
