PaRtZ
Simple explanation friend of mine has had her MSN account hacked and we have suspicions over who it is. Firstly which is the best firewall and secondly is there any way we can find out information aboutt the hacker? Thanks-eth
Simon
MSN can't be hacked. End of. A friend either guessed the secret question, or guessed the password. "Hacking" of home computers is a myth. It rarely, ever happens. Ever.
munkee
Yea pretty much as said above, the worst you can get nowadays with home computers is some lile 13 year old messing around trying to put sub 7 on your computer... oh the days of infecting myself with that... Danny
None. Windows firewall is perfectly sufficient everyone else is just paranoid. I wouldnt bother with anything else unless i were a company with lots of highly confidential data and pcs on 24/7.

Simon
Windows Firewall does the job 100% fine. It's even too secure in some cases, one of the reason i don't run it anymore. Home user computer security is hyped up, by the media and rumours, that are most of the time, completly not true. People need to stop worrying. tomturd
They taught us how to hack wireless networks in a practical about two weeks ago, once you know what to look for its pretty easy to capture the packets from the air and find peoples passwords, even with encryption. When i get home im going to sort out my parents network knowing how easy it is (theirs isnt secured at all ) Thats wirless networks though, wouldnt have a clue how to do it on a wired network, well not much of a clue anyway. Anyway its not going to keep me up at night, nor should it you.. just accept its happened and tell your friend to choose a better password next time :S
JT!
I'v 'hacked' my friends msn acount becuase i knew his pets name. Silly really, as they give you all this lecture about how your suposed to pick as password that is this and that. Then when it comes to the secret question, the answer can very very easily be found out. Plus, it wouldn't matter what kind of firewall you have becuase msn is online, and if it were ever hacked it would have nothing to do with your computer. Corish
I wouldn't call guessing/knowing someones password as hacking. Hacking is where someone anonymous gets into your pc. I've done it, but you have to do it to a fool, how to get there IP address is not that easy, although its very easy when they are dumb, all you do is go to google, type in "IP Address", open first link up and send him the link and get him to tell you the number shown on screen, once you have that you should be away so long as he has no firewall or internet security etc, its rare these days due to most of the population using internet security due to literally everyone knowing about Hackers, Virus's, Trojans etc. Corish Edited November 20, 2005 by Corish
Hoot
Basicly i think people are more intrested in hacking into servers etc, not home pc's!

If you dont want it to be guessed put in some random crap like... 'Whats my pets name?' 'Last year i went on holiday to australia it was fun and i saw a kangaroo' Id like to see someone guess that :)

Corish
there usally wrong though they could be using a proxey or anything True, but most of the time its correct, I'm on a local area network, at home, it splits internet up into several internets, I've just been on to the "IP Address" in google, and the IP address thats showing on screen is wrong, but all the other say exactly the same, So i'm guessing its the IP Address from the Broadband box, rather than the one given by my router :P
Danny
http://www.whatismyip.com/ - will tell you your ip address to the outside world. If you have a router etc you will probably have a different network address such as 10.0.0.X/192.168.0.X

You don't sound like you know anything to be honest :) (unless your using some pre built 'hacking program' which is far from the real thing). And what did you actually do once you had 'hacked' in? Bold claims..

Well I wouldn't call it major hacking etc, just got into his pc had a look around thats all. it was a while ago now, I had to send him a file too for which he had to open etc etc etc can't remember too much to be fair but there wasn't just an "IP Address" to it :P corish
Krisboats
I have norton personal firewall and microsoft firewall, but whenever i try and play any games over the internet with the norton firewall switched on it cocks up and random things happen whilst i'm trying to play (like people being there one minute and completely gone the next, or on counter strike it never lets me choose a team because the menu won't work). So i turn norton on for general browsing and only keep microsofts firewall running whilst i'm playing games. :P :P by the way norton has saved my computer a couple of times, little messages saying "an attempted attack on your computer has been blocked.. to view details click here" their usually trojans though, or like the ones off the tartybikes site a couple of weeks ago. But they never appear on my computer after i've played games so i just presumed they only appear when i'm browsing the internet, i would quite like for someone who actually knows to explain whether or not this guess was right? :)

If anyone is worried about it though, get ZoneAlarm (google...) which I'm sure is as good as Norton, but it's free. But if you're behind a router (with a proper firewall) then I doubt you need anything :)
