2sixstreet
Am running original Shimano hub and body that came with my Saracen. Have killed the freehub twice in as many months. Problem is, its an Acera body that has a male engagement (opposite to higher spec hubs) into the female hub so standard upgrades arent possible. The pawls are breaking and the body cracking. Has anyone solved this issue without upgrading the hub?
N.Wood
Your only real option is to upgrade the hub. Shimano hubs are utterly shite for trials, i'd rather scrape my teeth down a chalk board than use one. Save up and get either: A second hand Hope Mono/XC A DMR revolver hub and an ACS Claws. I ran Deore hubs back in the day, and luckily i could just transplant freehubs, but as you say, the Acera hubs are non-standard. Suck up the cost, it'll be worth it in the end - Dental treatment is expensive these days.
2sixstreet
Forgive my ignorance, have only ever run Shimano and Hugi hubs previously, but do the Hopes take Shimano cassettes? Also, if I couldnt find 2nd hand and had to buy new it would probably be cheaper getting a new wheel built rather than lacing new hub to existing rim? Any rim suggestions? Cheers. Yep, they take standard cassettes. Yeh, you may as well get a new rim while you're at it - To be honest there's no shortage of these hubs if you look around on the second hand market. Rim wise, Mavic D521 (EX712? Someone clarify this if you'd be so kind :S ) are very strong and hold grinds well, but they're thin compared to the current crop of 38-48mm rims available now. This means they won't fit in most UCI frames (Koxx's/ZOO's/Echo's etc) without some kind of bodge. If you ride alot of street, have a look at an Onza Ronnie, if you're more natural-inclined, have a look at the new Echo 48mm rim. Both are available from Tartybikes.com. What frame and rim are you currently running?
2sixstreet
Saracen MAD frame (my first trials bike so dent go too crazy) with an EX-S rim on the crappy Acera 8spd hub/body. Rim is holding up really well so would be a shame to sideline it.
N.Wood
Yeh, i'd seriously consider gettign a new wheel with a Hope on it. Chain Reaction Cycles do some good wheel deals, i think my XC on D521 came to £104 inc. p+p. Tartywheels.co.uk are some of the strongest in the business. 2sixstreet
Appreciate the comments. Have a new body on its way so when (not if) it dies i'll scrap it and go 2nd hand and a build or new complete. Cheers.
