JT!
Had my avid BB7 for a while now, and i'm getting on great with it. But recently i have ridden 3 peoples bikes with an avid and they are all massivly powerful than mine. I mean, really snappy. So i decided to go out and get some EBC reds, but they didn't much difference. So how can i make my avid as powerful as all the others out there? It has been like this since i got it. It is setup fine, cable runs smooth and everything. I think it's down to some sort of contamination of the pads / disc.
PaRtZ
Yeah I thought I had the same problem too, it takes a long time to bed in. also the pad alignment may be odd as in not hitting the disc square. This was the problem I had and took to LBS to sort it and they did :turned: Mine still requires more bedding, but its definitly better
Mark W
If the rotor was already contaminated and you put new pads on, you're largely f**ked anyway. You can try cleaning the rotor and pads though I suppose... How have you actually got the pads setup? Which is closest, etc.? Mine's really nice now, except the left-side (mobile) pad adjuster's fallen off, so it keeps loosening that pad :turned:

So if it isn't bedded in now it never will be. It's not just slightly less powerful then others, i rode another avid i nearly went over the bars! There's a big difference. I have cleaned the disc once, gave it a good going over and a really good rince. Didn't make a difference. Edited November 11, 2005 by JT! Like I said though - how are the actual pads themselves set up? Which pad is nearer the rotor, etc.?

Ali C
the only way I haev managed to get me disks working again (including avid) was to buy new pads AND a new disk, I just couldnt get new pads and an old disk to work.
nb88
I dont get how you can have a unpowerful avid on a 20" (Y) are you sure its all set up properly? did you do it as the manual said? any oil got near it lately? Could also try pouring water on it and doing the bedding in process. You shouldnt have bought ebc pads imo, the normal avid pads are awesome. Haz
Give FatMike 5 minutes in a dark room with a flashlight, multitool and your bike and he'll have it sqealing like a pig. That's what happened with mine anyway! Fatmike's in the know. (Y)
Swize
Problie sounds stupidly stupid but try running more cable throught the calip thingy so the lever pulls further and then use more knob, it made a mahoosive diffrence on mine. Hobnobs
Holy turd, just did what sam said to mine, and it feels great now, its so solid. (Y) How does it make any difference at all, im amazed.
Luke Drewery
My Avid has always been awesome, wet and dry. I have only cleaned the pads once and I have had the brake for about 6 months now, not sure exactly how long. I still have the original pads from when I got it and the performance is perfect, good modulation and powerful lock and bite. I run a cheap fibrax cable and there isnt much sponge either. I run quite a bit of cable through the caliper and my pad adjusters are screwed fairly far in but thats because of pad wear, not to change the performance. When I first fitted mine my cable had too much length to it, so I trimmed it down and it felt so much better! Less friction so its smoother and doesnt sponge as much. If youre cable is too long or can be trimmed, run it as short as you can, it really does make a difference to how the brake feels. It doesnt increase power, just makes it feel better at the lever. Try it. (Y)
the_ferret
ive only recently started running an avid due to having endless problems with hydraulic disks and i think its awesome cheap to set up and maintain.......meag power to! if you have trouble with it just go through each thing in a way service it so its all cleant then bed it in again i did it and all is well now! oggy
JT!
He means just leave it as it is for now, nice informative title btw. Leaving it alone isn't going to make it better. And the tittle does the job. Could have just put "help". I dont get how you can have a unpowerful avid on a 20" (Y) are you sure its all set up properly? did you do it as the manual said? any oil got near it lately? Put water on it numerous times, it does make it slightly better, but no where near as good as others. I can't see how i could set it up any better really. It does do the job ok as it is now, does tend to slip a bit when doing natural. I know the saying "don't fix it if it isn't broken" but i'v rode alot better and it made me realise i could get alot more power out of mine. nb88
Does it slip if you apply the brake and then pedal forwards? thats usually the way i test my brakes (Y)

What's the best way to clean a disc? Some sort of meths or something? :shifty:
the_ferret
disk cleaning pads or spray :shifty: also take pads out and rub them on concrete or the floor will get crap off them roughen them up a little but not too much oggy
