JT!
I want to make our stupid network setup normal. I could go on and tell you how we have it setup at the moment but it'd take ages - so i wont bother. We have a linksys wireless router 4 port switch. We also have the bog standard little grey BT modem. On the back of the router there's an ethernet port for marked 'internet' but the output from the BT modem is USB. So is there anyway to connect our current modem up to the router, and if not, is there a modem i can buy (for cheap) that'll work with the router. Let me know if you don't understand any part of it. (Y)
Siders77
I think I know what you're on about....Anyway. Have you tried using the USB cable to connect the modem to the computer and the Ethernet cable connecting the modem to the router? I think that's right anyway. (Y) If he could have an ethernet cable connecting modem -> router, he could just do that. Problem is he only has USB, not ethernet. I think you need a new modem, unless theres some kind of adapter. I hate usb modems, such a stupid idea. Is there no other output on the back of the modem, for ethernet? my ntl modem has both. Could always phone BT and ask for one aswell, they should provide a modem for use on a network or theyre rubbish.

(Y) Yes, that's the setup we have now, and it causes all sorts of problems, i can't accsess that PC for example. And when that pc has to be left on all the time. stubert
is the term router not usually a hub and modem built into one box? i didnt know you could get wireless hubs on their own. is the port on the back of the router not just a phone socket one? like the one you use to connect from wall phone socket to modem? I know this is making you sound stupid but its a common mistake. you'd probably be cheapest buying a new modem, or a new wireless router, as i dont believe there is a cable or transformer for usb to ethernet. stu
Siders77
Oh. That's wierd. I'm sure it's how mine's set up and I have no problems with mine (Y) Just do what Noz said and get a new router and see if that sorts it.

It dosn't have a modem in it. And the porn that says 'internet' is definatly an ethernet port.
nb88
A router is not a hub and modem built in. Its basically a hub, but with less ports, and doesnt need a server or anything. It doesnt have a modem, you need to plug a modem into it (well, some have modems nowadays...). So, does the modem have an ethernet output on the back? JT!
So, does the modem have an ethernet output on the back? the modem we have at the mo has a USB out put, it's that little grey one that everyone has.
nb88
the modem we have at the mo has a USB out put, it's that little grey one that everyone has. Yeah you cant use that then, unless theres some kind of convertor out there (ive never seen one). New modem i suppose, or give BT a ring and ask for an ethernet one (Y)
biketrialler
You need a modem with an ethernet out on the back. Otherwise, it will be a bodge and the internet host connected to the usb modem would have to be on all the time, which is a waste. A modem with ethernet is only like £20 i think. JT!
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/in...rice&show=stock !? But they are all modem routers arn't they, i just want a modem. If i was going to go down that road it would just make sence to sell the router we have now and buy a new one with a modem in it. biketrialler
Yeah, its a modem router, exactly. That box routes the modem into a network, and performs sharing and firewalling, exactly what that computer that you plug your current USB modem into does. Its like that computers job, in a little box. Yes, it wouldnt make much odds to sell your current hub for the £5 it is worth, and get a combined box. Your other sensible option would be to look at one of the first matches on the page I linked to which is exactly what you need. http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/in...oduct_uid=38085 A modem, with an ethernet out. Probably the best option :turned: Why didnt you buy one with a built in modem in the first place :P

I was hoping just to get a bod standard modem for less than half the price of that. Didn't think it'd cost that much. I'll probably leave it and just get a wirless/router/modem in one later on. biketrialler
Go second hand then, im sure you can get something off of ebay or something for around £15.
Danny
An ethernet adsl modem has to have a router slapped on it or it wouldnt work. You can get some 1port ones but most manufactrers slap 4 on.
inzane_2
sounds to me you got a cable router, you need an adsl router... I think?
spode@thinkbikes
Just to reiterate, just in case the thread as a whole seemed confusing. Your modem has USB only output. In order to host the internet using this, you will need a machine on all the time. You need a modem with Ethernet (RJ45) output. Using a crossover cable, you can connect this to your current switch and everything will be hunky dorey (assuming you set it all up right). Alternatively, sell your current wireless switch on eBay and use the money to buy a modem/switch/wireless AP in one.
Danny
Using a crossover cable I'm pretty certain that he would just need a straight through patch cable.
Tomm
I'm pretty certain that he would just need a straight through patch cable. Nah, not if he's plugging a modem + (1 port) router into a hub/switch (as opposed to a router). You would need a crossover cable, unless the hub has an uplink port. Or a normal cable into a router. JT!, just buy a modem/router/4 port switch/Wireless AP. They're no more than about £50 I think, less on eBay.
