Tony Harrison
Up until now I've bought all my domain names through Lycos, who provide my webspace. Twice in two days I've tried to buy a new domain name with them, with different credit cards, and both times it verified the order, then cancelled it. So I phoned customer service today and spoke to a foreigner who didn't understand 1) a word I said and 2) anything remotely technical. The call ended with him saying he was forwarding the details of the domain name I wanted to the second level technical support (or something) and it will be sorted out within a day he said. But, surely it can only be sorted out if 1) I verify payment again and 2) nobody else buys the domain in the meantime (its still available). So he was chatting rubbish. So I'm buying elsewhere, and I'm going to write Lycos a letter mentioning this, and asking why I still can't change my WHOIS entry for my existing dot com domain names (breach of DP Act??)... SO! Where is the cheapest place I can register a .com domain name for one year, with no web hosting and no fuss? Somewhere that is reliable and won't muck me about. Thanks in advance. AdamR28
We used http://www.oneandone.co.uk - think it was about about £5 for 2 years for a .co.uk, and £9 a year for .com. Been no problems so far :D Cheers Adam
Tony Harrison
Thanks Adam, I've bought it from there and it all seems fine so far.
Danny
I didnt care for 1&1's control panel when i helped adam set his up. For my personal domain i used http://www.123-reg.co.uk/
Tony Harrison
Anything's going to be better than Lycos. But thanks for the link Danny, their hosting looks quite good - I'll bear that in mind if I decide to swap.
Simon
For the love of all things high and mighty, please, please don't ever host with 1&1. Ever. There control panel is shit, as is there hosting. If you wan't to be put of trying to manage your own site, then go ahead and use 1&1, otherwise, steer clear. However, domains with them are cool, i have two with them i believe.
Tony Harrison
I quite like the look of the 123 hosting. I know someone who was trying to setup hosting with 1&1 and (like everyone seems to be saying) it was crap.
spode@thinkbikes
I buy domains from www.123reg.co.uk for .co.uks and www.godaddy.com for .coms. I host them myself on my server. Anyone else who wants I hosting, I do it for £30 a year, with a Plesk control panel. :turned:

spode@thinkbikes
I rent one in America, Red Hat Linux. Probably moving it back to the UK in the near future. I host a few sites on it, but not too many. I'm not very price competitive. But I've found the people I host can't really use control panels and expect me to set up things all the time. So I charge a little bit extra for the man labour (Besides, I don't think £30 per year is unreasonable). 1&1 is probably automated and actually getting help is a little harder. And they probably cram thousands of you on a single server.
Danny
I think simon wants details like server spec, provider, bw allowence etc :turned:
spode@thinkbikes
IIRC the server is a Pentium 4 2.4GHz with 512MB of ram. The deal I'm doing is 5GB of bandwidth per month with 500MB storage.
