Righto,

Basically yesterday my brother tried to load up Football Manager 2006 on the PC putting the disk in the DVD drive but it didn't auto load, upon trying to just access the disk he noticed there were neither present in my computer!

I restarted the computer but nothing changed, I can open them and close them etc but they just aren't reconized as being there, I check in Device Manager and see this:

I try and update, rollback then un-install the drivers and scan for hardware but when they re-install they come up with the same errors which are as follows:

Obviously its not a good thing to leave it like this and I've tried trouble shooter and looking on google for help but nothing works so far... Obviously I can't re-install the computer drivers or re-install XP because there on CD's and the CD's not being found is the problem I'm trying to fix (Y) very convenient..

Any help muchly appreciated..

Cheers Olly

my mates computer did this when i gave him a copy of MAGIX Music Maker 2005 silver. Both drives seemed invisible to the computer but opened and closed when you pressed the eject button.

He never managed to fix it and threw the computer in the bin. It was given to him for free anyway.

How old is the computer and did it come with any driver installation c.d's when you first got it? There may be a set of drivers on c.d. inside the packet with your xp installation disc (presuming you bought it as a prebuilt computer) if it did try borrowing another cd drive from someone you know and plug that in and use the driver c.d's off of that?

If it's less than a year old i would recommend taking it back to where you bought it from they should be able to sort it out for you, and i would not tell them it happened as a result of installing a game either unless they ask you if you installed anything. (it might mean you having to pay for repairs instead of it being under warranty)

Don't lie to them just neglect to tell them, something along the lines of I went to use a c.d. in the drive and for some reason the drives weren't there anymore.

maybe investing in something like norton goback might be a help in future, if your computer f**ks up you can just restart it and press the spacebar on the norton goback screen before windows starts and it will restore the computer back to a previous date, for example when you last turned it on before it f**ked up.

Actually thats reminded me of another option, have you tried using the system restore function thats built into xp, i don't know if it'll work for sure but it might be worth a try. To access it you have to click

Start> Control Panel> performance and maintenance> then click the system restore button in the "see also" menu on the left side of the window. this will open the system restore wizard.

If you can't manage to make your way through this yourself which i really think you will be able to then choose "restore my computer to an earlier time" and click next. choose the latest date that you have a restore on there BEFORE your c.d drives disappeared and click next.

sorry about it being a really long post but i hope it helps, and i hope you get it sorted soon mate.

I don't think unplugging the drives physically will do much for your cause.

Have you tried just deleting them from device manager and then restarting your computer? Then it should automatically detect them again.

And you COULD do a repair install of Windows XP. Assuming the drives still work, you should be able to boot from your Windows XP cd and do a repair install (not the recovery console). That would be my last cause of action if nothing else worked.

This guys on the right lines! Go into device manager and actually uninstall and delete the drivers, then the drives themsleves so it doesn't even show the errors. Then restart the computer, and it should come up with add new hardware wizard, and go from there!

I would guess that since they've both broken you've somehow screwed the IDE controller on your motherboard. Obviously try the drivers first, and then what Danny said. If that doesn't work, open the computer up and try and plug the IDE cable into another slot on the motherboard.

I don't think this would be a hardware problem. The fact that they are on device manager means they will appear in the BIOS, otherwise they wouldn't be in device manager at all (but by all means double check).

From what Krisboats has said, optical drives screwing up when installing MAGIX is not an isolated incident and nothing so far has pointed towards hardware failure. The only thing moving IDE channels etc. might do is just give Windows a kick up the butt to sort itself out. But I think it's barking up the wrong tree.

If uninstalling and reinstalling the drives in device manager doesn't sort things out, consider doing the same but for the IDE channels. Even think about updating your chipset drivers. Do you know what chipset your motherboard is using?

Hi guys,

Right heres what I tried:

Uninstalling and Deleting them from the Device Manager, then scanning for new hardware.

Also tried the same thing and re-booted the system to see if it found them, same errors as before.

I think physically removed the drives and loaded the PC up into BIOS where it claimed the "Unkown Drives" were still there?

Then I used a system restore from about 10 days ago and upon return all was well, drives were back working fine and everything else was sorted. I then proceeded to delete all the files in my folder marked "DELL" in My Computer thinking they were nessary but they turned out to be files containing Icons and other stuff so now Im about to restore to 11days ago (N)

Cheers for the responses though <_<

this happened to me i havent read your whole post so sorry if you have fixewd it but my problme was corrupt files which wrecked the disc drives, you have to completely restore your computer and get rid of the corrupt files which you might have got if it was from a file sharing computer ie they were shared with diff users on same computer.

Right people,

The system restore now doesn't work atleast not at the moment.

So now I need Anyone with a Dell Computer to copy the contents of the DELL folder in My Computer and zip them, then send them to me on MSN.

I'd be grateful if someones willing to help me out on that,

Cheers Olly
