Caleb
looky here? That could help you Adam, what you riding noow youve sold your toxsin btw? just give em a ring and ask them if they'd do you a helicoil. The kit for that size thread would be sttopidly priced but i imagine just a tenner from a firm :)
dwarrick
I know there is a BB that doesnt tread into the shell. Cant remember the type off hand, and how strong, but it is another option if you can find it.
Tomm
I know there is a BB that doesnt tread into the shell. Cant remember the type off hand, and how strong, but it is another option if you can find it. When I tried to do it a couple of years ago, the only thing that was available was an £8 job from ACOR. Square taper only too. See if your local bike shop can tap the threads using the VAR tool and hope that works. If that doesn't work, you need to think about a new frame/getting a crash replacement. Or you could aryldite a BB in the frame so it will never come out. Should be safe, but the frame would only last as long as the BB. Good luck! dave33
im sure you could turn down the external diamiter of the bb and that would make room for some sort of bush which you could screw into the bb shell and locktit in then cut the bb threads in that but is it really worth doing that on the frame :)
Tony Harrison
The problem is that it isn't cheap, and so buying a new frame (especially at trade + import duty) is going to be cheaper. Adam, you're a fool. I bet you had a 6ft scaffolding pole on your BB tool, either that or you cross-threaded it and forced it in. Or is it one of the Wirral goon's bikes? You could (if you could be bothered) get the BB shell machined out and get a press fit BB kit - there are various different BB's for BMX's now like that, although you don't really want to be running chromo 3-piece cranks. What frame is it? Personally, I would clean the threads off with degreaser, cover the whole lot in araldite or Loctite and wind it in. ben_travis
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ARGOS RACING CAN RE-TAP HIS BOTTOM BRACKET<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< like i said in the first reply steven riley (shovel) on here got his done when he dented the bottom bracket shell on his toxsin, and now it works fine so here you go adam Argos Racing Cycles Unit 12 Riverside Park, St. Annes Road, St. Annes. Tony Harrison
Yes Ben, but how can you re-tap what isn't there? If you dent a BB, you're making the inside diameter smaller (and distorted) so you can just open it up. If the BB threads are stripped out, then the tap, like the BB, will just slide in and not do anything because the BB is now too big inside. The meat to cut the thread out of has gone, hence the requirement for a helicoil (as Adam said). Unless Argos can put inserts into the BB and tap them, then he's stuffed. And if they did put inserts in, that would be expensive.
totaltrials
It's soooooo very unlikely you will get a helicoil for a BB, I doubt they make them, as people have said just re-tap it, although you may have stripped all the threads out so your BB wont go in, you can stil re-tap it, yes the thread will be too big and not as strong but you will be able to screw your BB in, then you just locktight it up and it will be fine. merseytrial
Honestly I was not to blame for this!! The BB cups sum how got stuck to the bb, so when I was unscrewing the bb, it must have been pulling the other cup into the frame. Then suddendly it popped out resulting bearing all over the foor as the bearing ring snapped away from the cup! Gutted. Thanks Ben for the racing company but If they can only re-tap I may as well just got to the bike shop. I need a Helicoil. Cheers Caleb Ill have a good search. And If tha doesnt work Ill try and paint it with loads of glue or chemical metal like Ian said. Gutted! CurtisRider
argos racing mill out the bb shell and put in a steel insert whichs is threaded and pressed in, i saw it in mbuk ages ago, i think its something like 60quid if i remember rightly from the picture you can certainly tell retapping would do bugger all :) i made my own bb tap (thanks to the advice of edd potts :P ) and that worked really well on a frame i was given with damaged bb threads seeing as leeson bikes use press fit bbs, you could possibly talk to clive and see if he can help you, he will most likely be cheaper than most people too :P
merseytrial
Thanks Paul!! and Ben too :P Just phoned Argos cycles and they said its £45 and £10 for the return postage! Not bad :) They said the press fit a sleve into the frame then cut a thread into it!! Yuppiiieee!!!! Adam
