dwarrick
Hey guys I am looking at the new echo cranks. I was just going the get the echo BB as well, but you cant run a front freewhell with this set up. Does anyone know what type of BB I sould be looking for. Thanks Dylan
Mark W
Hey, Basically, any splined (ISIS) BB will work fine. Personally, I'd recommend the FSA Platinum Pro DH BB, which you can get in the length you'll need (if you're runnig FFW, it'll have to be 128mm long) from www.tartybikes.co.uk. They're arooooooound £39.99 incl. P&P, but are pretty light and seem to not be made of crap, unlike my Truvativ one. Plus, they've got a normal, Shimano-esque BB remover tool interface, unlike that shit on the Gigapipe... But yeah, FSA Platinum Pro DH ISIS BB. Acronym-errific. guineasmithpig
why not go fixed cog front, with a rear freewheel? not really gaining any weight. if anythin, probs save some by usin a smaller rear freewheel, and using the echo bb. oh, and they look pwetty in there shiny, anodised lovelyness (Y) smiff Edited November 3, 2005 by guineasmithpig
Mark W
I guess the thing is: New BB < whole new drivetrain, price-wise. If you think about it, buying a new BB is a little less than buying a new BB, a new fixed sprocket, a new rear hub, 32 new spokes, a wheel-build, etc... Plus the options, as they stand, for cassette hubs is the Profile - which isn't light, the CK - which isn't cheap, and the Echo one - which isn't exactly proven, at all... guineasmithpig
sorry mark, meant rear freewheel, as in a dinky ACS on the back (Y) not a new cassette type hub and i figured, if the guy is lookin at nearly £60 for a bb, then maybe he's after lightweight and price int so much an issue? ah well, just my penny in the pot
Mark W
The dinkiest rear freewheel is a 13t Odyssey or KHE freewheel, and they skipped plenty enough on my BMX, let alone on a trials bike (Y) The 14t ACS Claws work, I guess, but you've gotta run like 20-22t upfront for that, plus that wouldn't really be any 'lighter' than a FFW setup... Waynio
how long are those echo b/b????? is they are like 120 odd mm wide, just put a spacer on the b/b if you want to use one, iv done it in the past with my b/b, put it over the axle not the cups...........and it works, the spacer sometimes needs to be like 5/6mm dependant on the recess of the shaft. Waynio...................
Mark W
The BB spindle's 128mm. With a standard BB, my freewheel's got at most 3mm clearance (literally - I couldn't fit a 4mm wide Echo bash on there), and with the width of the bearing races of the Echo BB, I know I wouldn't be able to fit anything on there without seriously, seriously spacing out my crank on the spindle itself, which is a bit sketchy, to be fair. Echo like to put a positive spin on everything, so them saying that they're not suitable for FFW would lead me to believe they were telling the truth? Oh yeah - don't forget to add £8 to the price so you can actually get the BB in and out of your frame with the special tool...
Houseface
mark, will i have enough room on my zona zip with a 127.5mm bb for a ffw? steve.
dwarrick
I am running a 18t WI freewheel so I would like to keep that for the front
Mark W
With a 127.5mm BB, you will be able to get a FFW on there, as that's my current set up. To Mr. Dwarrick, I've got the Eno on my bike too, and you'll need a non-Echo 128mm BB to do it, basically. So either a Truvativ Gigapipe or an FSA Platinum Pro, unless you want to get done by Try-All for their BB...
