matthewholdsworth
right lads im gettin well and truely fed up with this crap about hope's new hub. trailnoir (aka ash) has the final proto of the hub on his bike, there have been no less than 6 models of the hub, and various ratchet set ups tested within the hub. they all broke on the other test bike (rik duckworth) in spectacular fashion. would u want a product rushed out that doesnt work? the hub has completely changed from one with 72 ep to the final design of 48 ep. and trust me its very good. me and ash live in barnoldswick where hope are based and ash has been working closely with the designers. he is not some joke of a rider he is also an engineer at rolls royce, and a damn good one, he knows his stuff. the pro2 hub is a lightweight hub designed for the usual XC type of riding, but being hope it'll be good for other types. it seems that perhaps hope have been to quick letting news of this hub development go to press and have got a few people rather excited about it. be mature and just wait for it, stop slagging hope off. they have to get products right or it'll cost them lots in aftercare/recalls etc. if you want info on it ring hope and ask them nicely, if they dont want to tell u they dont have to, if u read mbuk this month (the 06 stuff mag) the pro2 is in there. it is coming out. they arent a big company and so idea-release period takes longer (setting machines for batch production etc). pm trialnoir he will answer all questions as best he can on here, but to be honest hope arent letting anyone know release date as yet. sorry for ranting on but there is no need for some of the comments that have been made, not just in this topic, but previous ones. Davetrials
Just cos hes a mechanic at rolls royce doesnt mean hes a hub boffin does it Rollsroyce Job requirements *Good mechanic skills *Good with customers *Must have vast knowlage of bicycle hubs
guineasmithpig
Just cos hes a mechanic at rolls royce doesnt mean hes a hub boffin does it Rollsroyce Job requirements *Good mechanic skills *Good with customers *Must have vast knowlage of bicycle hubs errrrrrrrrrrrrr.... 1. engineer does not mean 'mechanic' 2. you don't need a 'vast knowledge of bicycle hubs' to know the best way to design them. simple engineering principles such as the behaviour of the materials under load, what loads are gonna be applied. all a hub is, is a pawl and ratchet mechanism within a shell, running on an axle. you probably ain't got the first clue what forces are being experienced by the internals of a hub during trials use. its almost impossible for companies to make absolutely perfect components for trials riders. they have to suit the market for use and cost. if someone made a totally indestructable, superlightweight trials specific hub, it'd cost about 3 times as much a king, n it'd b pointless developin it, because no1 wud buy it! big up hope for spendin all this time and money on our little niche market of cycling. bet its cost em a fair bob or two so far, but i'm sure the end result will be fantastic. i'm also sure there'll be plenty o little kids on here who'll find somethin to whinge about with it. geez, i must be gettin old. i swear some recent posts have come round for about the 3rd or fourth time (or more) since i signed up! long live hope tech! yours truly a grumpy old man (aka smithy)

Final proto? Hmm. Haven't heard that one before (Y) From my experience with testing stuff, it isn't a final prototype 'til you're looking back on it after making a batch of finished goods. the pro2 hub is a lightweight hub designed for the usual XC type of riding, but being hope it'll be good for other types. Erm, isn't there a Hope Pro2 and a Pro2T trials-specific one? it seems that perhaps hope have been to quick letting news of this hub development go to press and have got a few people rather excited about it. be mature and just wait for it, stop slagging hope off. they have to get products right or it'll cost them lots in aftercare/recalls etc. I think it's just saying "It'll be released ________", then "It'll be released ________", then "It's all sorted, we've altered suppliers, it'll be released _______", etc. is generating loads of hype, so people are bound to get arsey when they're waiting for a new hub. In other threads, people have said they're not buying a new hub yet just to wait for the new Pro2T, so maybe they're just getting fed up? if you want info on it ring hope and ask them nicely, if they dont want to tell u they dont have to, if u read mbuk this month (the 06 stuff mag) the pro2 is in there. to be honest, MBUK doesn't mean shit to me. Their "First views" seem to generally be fairly sketchy, and they blatantly throw tests to whoever they're "in" with, or whoever's paid the most for advertising (which used to happen a lot with Scott products...). I wouldn't take their word as gospel, although I know Hope are carrying on developing the hub, etc...
matthewholdsworth
yes mark there is a pro2 and a pro2 T, as the first post of this topic did say, and he was asking what the pro2 was for, so i answered him. davetrials by rolls royce i mean the AEROPLANE engine manufacturer not the flash car company, the vast number of employees dont have any contact with the public, you've got to know your stuff to work there. tank_rider
Jesus guys, you moan when a product is released and its not fully sorted, yet if something is delayed due to problems that the company wants to get sorted before going to market then you slag them off too. Hope are a relatively small company and havent got hundreds of engineers that they can pull off other projects to get a certain product out the door on time. Cut the some slack!! I guess waynio was talking about a proven technology rather than a proven hub design, although the whole pawl and ratchet system does have its flaws and problems. Anyhoo, i'm looking forward to seeing the insides of the new echo and hope hubs when they are both available, will be interesting to see how their approaches compare and contrast. and btw engineering is a whole world away from a mechanic. Engineers investigate, develop and design products (including cars) which mechanics then maintain.
dave85
I dont think anyone wouldve moaned if they'd said "we've got this new hub, its very promising but we're not happy with it yet, give us untill christmas and we'll have it sorted" rather than "yeah, definately june/july/august/chrismas/doomsday". Its just a bit frustrating, thats all :-
