Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey is what you need.

Has 4g of glutamine and BCAA's and is by far the best selling whey out there. Buy off ebay ( Elite Supplements ).

I'd also recommend creatine because it will make a difference in the long run...

Mix whey and creatine ( 2 scoops of whey + 10g creatine monohydrate ) STRAIGHT AFTER your workout.

Possibly the best thing you could put in your body after a hard workout.

Gav

I usually have 1 scoop before and one after if I'm at the gym just in case i don't fancy heading home straight away afterwards. I have creatine capsules which i take daily.

anyway I've discovered possibly the most versatile thing you can use for upper body strength is a punch bag+ wall mount i bought an unfilled bag which cost about 20 and filled it with sand for free it's incredibly solid I mean it f**king hurts to punch it even with full competition 14oZ gloves it also weighs just over 50kgs so tie a rope around it and it's perfect for doing dead lift reps and bench reps I've been using it for everything really and the wall mount is great for pull ups defo worth it even if you aren't into boxing

Do you work out daily, if not, then you dont really need to take them everyday, creatine just helps in replenishing ATP (high energy compound) alot quicker and helps for short, high intensity activities (weights training etc) and doesnt last for very long (unless supplemented), after which your body breaks down glycogen to replenish ATP stores.

On the protein supplement side of things, i use the Optimum Nutrition gold standard aswell, its tastes alright (chocolate one, dont buy cookies n cream, ive still got 3/4 of a tub in my room its absolutely disgusting) and isnt too bad for the price you pay.

Bah, i need to start excercising again, stupid christmas holidays and all the fatty foods made me put on about 12lbs its crazy.

I work out daily usually not full blown but still take them any way as it's not really doing me any harm

after nearly 1 year of no gym.. and 8 months of not doing any form of cardio... i decided to go back to the gym lol. Not a proper one like before.. this one is like machines.. a few free weights but meh.. i feel like a complete sell out.. but at the same time im not overly bothered. I went on the exercise bike .. i cudnt even do a 3 minute sprint.. i heart attacked after half the time lol.. lets hope i can sort this all out in the next few weeks.

A bit pissed off they dont have a squat rack :( but i can do dips/pulls ups.. and free weights shit.. but ive realised.. machines are so much easier lol

Ofcourse you need to take creatine daily, you go through a loading cycle 20mg per day for 3 - 5 days.

After that you cycle it for 8 weeks, taking 5 - 10 mg ( 5mg on non-workout days 10mg on hard training days right after your workout with the protein )

which is followed by 4 weeks off.

If you dont take it daily you lose its effects.

And im talking about monohydrate, if your taking ethyl ester ( CEE ) you dont need to load and you dont need to take it daily.

You dont have to creatine load all the time, you can take the smaller amounts and still have the same creatine levels as when loading. I know what you mean though as some people say that by using cycles it stops the body from adapting to the supplement of creatine and stopping the body from supplying it naturally, but just through continuous use hasnt been found that much different from loading. So it's up to whoever uses it really.

I have no idea, I was just told the freeweights are better. Much, in fact.

Free weights will do exactly the same as machines you just add more weight to machines unless they've been balanced. free weights are more dangerous and you don't need a spotter for a machine so machines are probs better if you're not mega serious.

erm..

free weights will always own machines. Its not just about being able to lift heavy weight its about stability and stabalising muscles. For example.. doing shoulder press sitting down on a machine you can cheat everything. Try it standing with dumbells.. u wont be able to lift half the weight you could on the machine because you need to stabalise the weight, you get a much higher muscle recruitment and stimulation of nerves throughout your body. Basically free weights will hit lots of areas at once so increase growth much more than just sat at a machine isolating one thing.

there is a lot of science behind it.. and common sense.. but thats basically it.

Words.

Yes, plus free weights promote a free range of motion, whereas machines restrict this (although some newer machines are quite good with allowing good motion).

But yeh i agree, due to the stabilising muscles involved in using free weights, it is alot better for you as everything is not in a fixed position.

I know about free motion and that but if your only doing it to look good or your not bothered about lifting huge amounts then machines are fine you can build muscle just as fast (although different muscles). it just makes life easier and it's easy to not get hurt.

I use both so i'm not to bothered.

You should use both machines and free weights.

There are some machines like the lat pulldown machine and cables, smith machine which are amazing for hitting certain areas and you cant get free weights to do what a lat pulldown machine does to your back, so its not really a thing of using free weights or machines.

Free weights for majority of exercises but never rule machines out all together.

I am joining the gym at college, it's free, all I have to do now is go along on Wednesday and slog my guts out for 40/60 mins.

Hopefully this will enable me to get some decent cardio work done. At the moment I am doing roughly, none.

Well I went swimming last Wednesday. That's it so far.

what does a lat pull down beat wide grip pulls ups on? you can even add weight with a dip belt.

FAR BETTER contraction of the lats.

The pull ups will involve biceps and secondary muscles way too much.

There's a good reason why pro's and all the people I know use lat pulldown over pull ups.

I'm a little pissed off, all of my lifts are going up dramatically, but my bench press hasn't gone up at all.

Stuff like bent over rows I have had to put up 3 times already.

My arms have gone up 2 inches since starting though. (Y)

90 curls, (3 tpyes), clearly doing their work at last!

The whey protein at Holland & Barrat is quite often included in half price deals etc so it's worth keeping a look out for that, quite often advertised on telly as well.

I've passed all the administration and the pre-joining fitness test for the Royal Marines and now awaiting my potential royal marines course date, which is basically 3 days of physical tests, where they beast you until you cryyyyy!

Tis gonna be fun!

But yea, ive joined my local gym recently to help me prepare and started giving it plenty of beans on bench press, incline bench press, press ups, tricep dips, pull ups, upright rowing, sit ups, sat down rowing (cant remember its proper name), standing lateral raises and shoulder press. I think thats about it. Aiming to build up upper body strength for the fitness assesments and also things like the crawling im going to have to do and kind of wrestling etc.

I'll keep you posted on my progress!

EDIT:

The whey protein is on offer now:- Half price protein
