I would use brake cleaner from halfords (hellfrauds as you will know them), or methalated spirits as i don't think they leave a residue, I may be wrong though so just get the brake cleaner.

EDIT: muck-off will probs do the trick too.

Would the hope sh*t shifter do the job on brakes :P I found the easiest way to clean my disk before when I had it (I somehow managed to get strawberry laces stuck to it on a ride :D ) was to take off the disk and then leave it to soak in water, then take a smooth scruber thingy (washing up sponge) and gently rub the whole disk.....Then leave to dry and wack it back on. Whether that's the best thing to do or not im not sure....

A tip from hope themselves: If your rotor is very contaminated, and cleaners don't seem to be doing anything, take off the disk, put it in the dishwasher (alone, or with other disks, but not with dirty plates lol!). Comes out sparkling. Couple wiht new pads (if there contaminated too) and you get a new brake pretty much.

As you said use the whitespirtit to getrid of dirt but as it leaves a small film you will need to wash in some warm water with some washing up liquid in it as this burns or cleans off oils and grease and so on. (Y)
