Luke_bradley
You may think it is a stupid question but i really have no idea. I absolutely love hubs with higher engagements than mine. I have a Hope xc rear disk hub and i was wondering by changing certain parts of the hub would i be able to increase the engagements? Cheers, Luke (Y)
nb88
Nope... take a look inside to see how it all works. Only way you'd be able to do it is drill out the driver at 3 places, offset to the 3 pawls, and put in 3 more pawls. This would double the engagement......but it isnt gonna happen, lol. So basically just live with it, or buy a new hub.
Waynio
just use your pedals a bit more, feel fo the engagement and pretend you have 72 pick up points if you have to. i have used hope for the last 18months and wouldnt go to anything else. weather it have 24 pick ups of 36, i dont care, id rather use something im not breaking than something that is too complicated fo its own good. i get on fine with mine doesnt affect my gapping or riding at all. all the riders i have seen recently use chris kings........... but i wont even go into why i dont use em any more its too boring. Waynio........................ be thankful you have got a hope hub buddy, you could still be using "Shitmano" hehe. altho i probably would if i had to. if someone gave me them for free i would use em. dwarrick
I remember seeing someone on pinkbike.com taking a deore hub and adding engagment points. basically in that hub there are 2 pawls but it was build for some reason with a spot to out 3. basically he just put in another pawl and got more ingagment. Do some searching on pinkbike.com and maybe you can still find it.
nmt_oli
A hope XC is enough, I used to run one on my old bike, (which was nicked) and still do on my jump bike. If your used to the low engagements its fine, ive only got a chris king now cause i got it dirt cheap, plus ive always wanted one to try long term (ive only ever tried them on other peoples bikes before). I remeber the first time a tried a king, it was even before i got my first hope hubs i think lol, when the kings just came into this country, and htought it was amazing because the pick up did feel instant, as i was used to a 'shitmano' with 14 engagement points, and unreliable ones at that, so 72 was over 5 times faster pick up, and all i could feel was the squidge in the tyre, so it was very cool. However, now ive gone from hope XC (21 rock solid engagements) to my CK, i have noticed a difference, but it doesnt feel as 'squidgy' as remember, i now feel the gap before it engages, even though its smaller, so its not that much different in that respect. I think you should stick with your hub until you need a new wheel, or theres a problem with it. The new hope pro 2 is out soon hopefully, i would have loved to get that, 48 solid hope engagements, which is plenty.
Mark W
If you're running 22:18, get a 44t sprocket up front. That way, you'll effectively have more per crank revolution ^_^ I noticed a big change from my el shite Dicta to my Eno freewheel. 16 -> 72. Big change :P I also could feel the difference between my Eno and the rise in performance of a CK hub. Plus, going back to a 36 EP ACS Claw sucked arse (although that was mainly 'cos the Claws are shite)... If it feels OK, don't bother changing it <_<
shovel
i can see what you mean about more engagements, i used to run a hope ti-glide(24 engagements i think) rear hub for years and it was alright, got on fine with it i then upgraded to a chris king classic earlier this year and you notice a huge difference in the performance of the hub, the engagement is so much more instant and alot more solid theres nothing wrong hopes really, the engagements alot better than a shimano, so i wouldn't bother trying to take it apart and mess about with the pawls and springs as you'll just make problems but if you want a rear hub with more engagements either get a profile or a chris king
nmt_oli
but if you want a rear hub with more engagements either get a profile or a chris king just to let you know, Dave and Adam at tarty bikes advised me away from the Stock (MTB 135mm) profile hubs, as apparently there have been a lot of problems with them. Chris King hubs are very good, people have reported problems, but that is usually because of lack of maintenance. As they are a different system to the hopes and profiles (almost maintenance free), the need a specal lube every now and again, but its really not hard to do. In fact, i think its easier than servicing a hope, as there are no pawls and springs flying everywhere! it just needs to be done a bit more often. Also shovel, your hope had 21 engagement points as far as i know.
AdamR28
On 26"/Stock bikes only, that is <_<
Clarky
Just serviced my hope xc last night 1 month old from hope replacement, cleaned it thouroghly with toothbrush and brake cleaner,It's as loud as a profile hub now! clarky <_< ^_^
Luke Drewery
I switched from a hope to a King classic hub and its so much better. The engagement is over three times quicker, it looks nicer, its lighter and has a nice sound. Also, I managed to snap an axle on a Hope hub and kill about five freehub bodies as well as several sets of pawls and springs which is shit considering I'm not a heavy rider! (seriously). I got mine as a full wheel from ebay for £150 and it was worth it. <_<
nmt_oli
It's as loud as a profile hub now! clarky :D :P Since when does the amount of noise from a hub affect the engagements :P
Tomm
Chris King hubs are very good, people have reported problems, but that is usually because of lack of maintenance. In the last 2 years I don't think I've touched the insides of my King. In fact I would say that I had to fiddle with my Hope XC more when I had it. Maybe I'm lucky, but I don't think CK's require as much TLC as people would have you believe :P

Mark W
Or the CK's a lot more expensive, so they'd hope it would work better?
Mr Motivator
No, you'd need a new hub (Y) Hope XCs are fine though, there's plenty of engagements (Y)
