JT!
I'v given up on my old laptop now as it's got a nice burnt hole in the main board to stop the power going to it. (Y) Tried to get it repaird but it's not happening so.... http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/572_289310.html I'm thinking that. Yeah it's cheap and not over powerful, but i don't play games. Just general msn, TF, downloading, music tom foolary. Plus the 3 years cover, which is £180 added onto it. Just seing if anyone knows of a better deal out there befor i buy. Nothing from dell please after my mate has had nothing but trouble with them. :) Oh yeah, what's the deal with the drop in processor speeds. My old one was 2.4ghz and now the best you can buy is 2ghz. Edited October 27, 2005 by JT!
stubert
Seems good value for money, but is that £180 EXTRA for 3 years cover? i personally wouldnt get that, just make sure its covered on ur home insurance for damage or theft. most things that go wrong with a computer softwear wise you can sort yourself. The new ones do more things per clock cycle. It's like two riders riding at the same speed. The guy on the mod has 20" wheels that rotate at a higher rpm than a 26" one, but both riders are going as fast as each other. So these new computers have bigger wheels so the hub doesn't get as hot. And heat is the enemy of the laptop.

Well i have my old one for 2 moths over the 1 free year and it borke. And it would cost like £400 (probably more) to repair. SO if i have the 3 year on it i wouldn't be spending half a grand now. Better safe than sorry. Home insurace may cover damage, but not faulty items (like mine was) so if something starts to smoke again, it won't be coverd on the home insurace. So if i did get the 3 years cover. It'll be coverd for both things. The new ones do more things per clock cycle. It's like two riders riding at the same speed. If I were you I'd always get the 3 year thing. It's bloody brilliant. With my new PC, in 2 and a half years time I'll be carrying it to my car when I 'accidently' drop and smash it. Immediately I get sent a brand spanking new one, same spec. Ebay!

spode@thinkbikes
The 3 year warrantees are generally not worth it. However, if you can get someone like PC World to talk down the price if you buy the warranty, then take it. Then you have 14 days to get a refund on the warrantee. So get the refund and you still get the discount on the laptop (discovered that in an undercover shopping thingy....). There are some pretty good laptops on ebuyer.com for under £500. I would go with either an HP or the Thinkpads. The Pentium M's used in current laptops are not like previous Pentium 4Ms. They have a shorter pipeline which makes them more effecient per clock cycle (they are more like super Pentium 3's, than Pentium 4's.) A 1.6GHz Pentium M, or hell a Celeron M would be plenty, especially on your budget.
JT!
The 3 year warrantees are generally not worth it. Why not? Like i said above i wouldn't have to be forking out laods of cash on a laptop now if i have the extended warrenty on my old one.

Like i said above i wouldn't have to be forking out laods of cash on a laptop now if i have the extended warrenty on my old one. Because they are a lot of money and most people won't use them. And it is very rarely a new for new swap out. Generally, purchasing some seperate insurance works out cheaper. Or just having it covered under your house insurance.
