Ive been looking at all the replys to new vids and there seems to be lots of critisysm about music, riding and editing so i was wondering what do you want to see hear and how you want it to be edited. In my opinion i dont mind how it is as people have tried with editing and there just getting put down and for the riding thre is allways room for improvement and smoothnes going big is good but also nice little lines are good too.

Discus people

As far as im concernt a chilled song is fine, along with simple editing but effects are also good if they are not over used / over done. The most important bit is the riding at the end of the day. So suppose you just have to try the best to your ability and if u bring a vid out a few months later then people can go oh he has got better.

no-one derserves to have their riding put down, we were all at a low level (and still are in some cases) at some point, trials should be about fun, not highest tap/sidehop, although those are always enjoyable to watch.

However,...

if someone is riding small, or slow they shouldn't try and hype it up with stupidly fast, over the top, "help i'm having a fit" music. Or if they do, they should edit to the song, rather than stick all their clips on the timeline and wack a song over the top, hoping it'll come out like a CLS video or something.

If someone really wants to do that, and they release the video with stupid music and half assed editing, then fair enough, but at least be prepared to take a slaiting by people who don't like it. If you put some media out there, accept that you can't please everyone.

Whilst i'm here, what is the actual attraction of songs with constant screaming/shouting in them? Fair enough have maybe one or too shouts (i accept people can get lost in their music) but entire verses just screamed like the singer is in pain or something, it sounds stupid and is really really annoying.

If a band is gonna sing, they could at least make it so the listener knows what the hell they're on about, otherwise just have a blank track.

As long as the vid is well thought out, carefully filmed and not too cheesy I'm fine with it, and as for music, anything other than totally annoying crap like on the trialsworld bali video ;) "Bali in my eyes" - crap!

You'll never get everyone to love a vid, noeons prefcet ;)

my topic should have been bumped its on page 2 in chit chat think

but yes im going to make a video to naff all music, and just leave it so you can hear how rough and stuff i am, just put your fave music track on and watch the riding. i feel people should watch the riding alot more and not get too lost in the tune as when they do this if the song is really explosive they expect big moves and the gubbings. look at cultivated stans videos he uses soft music and his smooth style suits them down to the ground, to me i rekon his vids should be 2/3mins long and no more, as it would be more than adequet and keep you wanting to watch more.

only my opinions on the matter. but hey your always going to have some people who dont like it. people have different tastes or music and riding etc etc

Surely we should be looking at just the riding, not the music or editing, this isn't canne film festival! it doesn't matter about the music/editing

it's about the riding!

yes it is about the riding.

but,

a video that has a little thought gone into the editing/music is more enjoyable to watch and will get watched more often.

plus when i make a video i am making something for me/my friends and i want to be able to look back and enjoy watching it, a bit of pride in what you make never hurt anyone.

a lot of the time its just simple things, like i have seen vids that have had a huge drop gap in a mellow part of the song and a smally techy line in a screamy bit, swap them around and the video is instantly better. when i am making a vid i NEVER use the first song i think will work.

as for time i agree with wayne 2-3mins is long enough for one rider and maybe 4-7 for a group of riders, and whatever for bigger events, roadtrip, bikeshows, etc etc

No - its everything .....

I want to see it all good riding well thought out filming, interesting lines, music that has been edited to, and some subtle editing.... Its the whole thing that makes a good vid - i mean.... I still watch chainspotting and its THE best mountain bike film i own - you cant really say the riding in that is super special now can you ?

Rowan's right. Look at his last "Jump" video for proof of that. The editing was really good to that, even with an...er...unorthodox song, and it worked really well. I've watched that video loads of times just because of the creative lines, interesting angles, great editing, and his sexy face.

However, if a video is edited really badly, I'm less likely to even watch it all the way through. If it's got stupidly heavy music, it won't flow well. For example, in TM1 Sam Wheeler's section and Jonny Jones's's's's's's's's sections didn't 'work' as well for me as some of the others simply because the music was too heavy. Trials doesn't have the sort of "BANG BANG" flow you need to use heavier music, so it seems slightly stupid to use it. I mean, even in Tunni's last video with all those huge moves (some made, and some not made eh <_<), he didn't really pull that sort of music off.

If it's enjoyable to watch, people will like it more.

I don't think, in answer ot the original question, that editors should be told how to make videos as it's like art, you don't say "You shouldn't paint like that, blah blah blah" or we wouldn't have had Picasso, Monet, etc., and you don't say to musicians "You shouldn't play like that", unless it's Meg White 'cos she can't play drums for shit.

Fact.

So it's up to the editor, really. Just do it how you want to, really. If people don't like it, ask for constructive criticism and learn for the future I guess.
