G-Jordan
Hey, I need to get my welded acs ffw off my cranks and I am aware that there are different ways of doing this, so if you have had experience with this then please post and say how you managed to get the freewheel off. ta, george j
Mark W
Have the tabs been ground off then? And I guess you mean the lockring's welded on, yeah?
Caleb
If the tabs are still existatnt, you'll be wanting 1. a decent freewheel remover (ACS) di a beefy one, will last forever invest in one ;) 2. A biggish adjustable spanner, and a large pole that will slot oiver the end of the spanner. 3 . A decent metal vice. 4. a threaded axle with two big washers ansd two big nuts on either end. You use the axle to bolt the tool to the crank so it wont slip, (Not too tight t not too loose though.) Then clamp the crank in the vice Tight then use the adjustable spanner/ pole on th end depending how strong you are. turn/smack anti clockwise ( the way the freewheel s[ins ) Should come off fine, lot of hard work but you will be very satisfied when is off ;) if the above fails, angle grinder £12.99 B+Q :)
G-Jordan
tabs have been ground off unfortunatly and yeah i mean the lockring is welded. I have an angle grinder, just not sure of the best way to use it?
Caleb
cut the freewheel off as much as you can with out dmaging the cranks oor threads. Try doing it in sections then trying to prize each one off upwards , so itn wont damage the threads.
Bionic Balls
cut new tabs out...
Mark W
Cutting new tabs out? Why the hell bother ;) If you've got the tools to cut tabs, you've got the tools to cut it off, which is a damn sight easier than having to try and get the tabs the perfect size/depth/shape... Will Arnold
if you have a vice then its piss easy, grind two flat spots in the freewheel and chuck it in the vice and turn the crank arm ;)
DTT - Echo Team
the free wheel has been welded?? put it int he vice, then use some grip wrenches, around the teeth, and push, may damage teeth but it wont come off other wise. ross
Dr. Nick Riviera
dont think he means its been welded solid , just the lockrings been welded on george you could try welding it solid then getting it off in a vice like ross said ;)
Janson
grind the welded spots, and remove the lockring. throw the internals away. grind two flat spots on the freewheel body, fasten in a vice and beast it off. it's the best way. dave85
Grinding flat spots on isnt usually necessary in my experience, the two pawl pockets are enough to get hold of in the vice or with some stillsons.
G-Jordan
cheers guys i did it. I basically ground the outer bit with the teeth, on either side until it fell off then i ground two flat spots on the inner bit, whacked it in a vice and added a 3m scaffolding pole to the end of my crank arm and it undid really easily. Sorted, ta anyway, george j
