cp101
In the last month or so, have any of you guys made progress in ways that previously seemed unlikely? I'm happy cuz I've been rear wheel hopping for the past week or so, nicely. Awesome, right? you - it's not the greatest experience starting out, ha! Especially trying to learn in parks, then have people look at you like you're just trying to show off, atleast I get that feeling.. Ha, I wish I were 13 and just starting trials. toxicturky
yeah, i was 16 when i started riding trials and it allways seemed like that but don't get put off cos the majority of the general public won't actually notice you untill you start jumping off walls and such, i started learning over the summer holidays when i left high school and where i live in southport it's full of tourists at that time of the year, riding with others helps, always get frustrated when i can't seem to learn somthing but unfortunatly you just got to practice Mark. Endohopper
My main criteria of my own progress is enjoyment .
Shaun H
I wouldn't worry about what people think of what you're doing although worrying a little bit is basic human nature, we don't all want to look like *complete* twats after all... Just make sure, whatever progress you're making, you're having fun whilst you do it and make sure you nail those basics ;)
nafan
I'm 14 I started last year but I'm not all that good. I've just got my new pitbull frame and its loovely on the rear wheel, I made a stupidly large amount of progress in drops since the summer. I went from dropping off 2 foot walls to 6 foot funboxes... I am hoping to start doing some lurch drops soon... Looking mostly at phone boxes and roofs by summer... My mate got on my pitbull yesterday (before my chainring broke) and did an unusually large amount of backhops compared top on his mission... but he's getting a t mag 05 on friday when I get my new cranks so hopefully we'll be out riding together... ;) ;)
Joe_Elding
I started When i was 13 about 8 months ago and for the first two month's the progress was slow while I was getting the basics covered. But recently i have just started getting better and better to such I'm improving something or learning something new every ride, I've just reached barheight sidehops a few days ago and have got front-to-backs on rails sorted ;) Edited October 26, 2005 by Joe_Elding
cookie456_the2nd
Ive been riding since i was like 12 (dirt, street, bsx etc) but only been riding for trials for a year and a half or so. Progress improved dramitically when i started riding with other trials riders, it gives you something to aim for. Shame that i never have anyone to ride with really, usually just me, on my larry... ;)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but thats a really stupid goal. Anyone can do drops, its being bothered to do them, and not being scared. It involves hardly any skill and doesn't really help you with anything to do with trials. Also, by lurch drops i'm assuming you currently just ride of the drop, which is even worse. You need to learn to get up the stuff you drop off, or gap to the things you drop off, or sidehop to it then drop off. Obviously each to their own, but if you want to get better at trials, then learn some proper trials moves, not just drops. Me? I've learnt shit all in months. I'm the slowest learner you will ever meet. ;)
trialsking 55
erm my sidehopping has been improving alot lately, mainly because thats what i've been focusing on because thy're so fun. oh and i've been learning to gap smoother after many dents and annoying punctures. Ha, I wish I were 13 and just starting trials. i'm 13 and have been riding for nearly three years

Krisboats
i've been riding just over a year and have only recently started learning front taps. I can get up walls about 12-13 normal bricks high which is just over my bar height (around 41-42 inches) i can gap distances bigger than my bike (i don't really know how big exactly but i can stick my bike in the gap and move it back and forth a bit) i can't really sidehop onto walls but can sidehop over a high jump pole about the height of my lower headset cup. i can barely manual more than 10 meters on average and can barspin drop off and crankflip and all those kinda things. i can also do 180 bunnyhops and almost 360 tyre taps. i can do like 5 foot drop offs becuase i have never tried anything bigger. (a dodgy dmr rear hub kinda removes all courage from me when i'm high up) i quite often go riding with other people about my kinda level but usually go out on my lonesome. :) i'm trying to convince my best mate to get a trials bike though to sort this out. (if anyone has a stock bike thats in averagely good condish that they would part with for around £200 give me a pm) having fun is most important to me though so i don't really know how good i am compaired to others, and i'm not really to fussed, but its always nice to know isn't it (Y) :)

Josephine
I've been riding for coming up to two years, it's been plagued with injury and breakage about half the time, but it's still fun (Y) Recently my biggest improvement has been gaps, went from barely being able to nail 5½ft to doin' 6½ without too much trouble. Sidehops are getting better, 'specially to thin stuff. My one complaint is that I never really mastered the basics until this point, but now I feel 500% more confident. zanneslover
Well Istarted trials when I was 13 and stuck at it for 3 years. Never really got anywhere due to being on a giant xc bike but got the basics nailed. I then thought I would try BMXing Bad Idea major injury, internal bleeding etc. Stop riding altogether after that. Now Im 19 and been riding for a month. I have found the more you practise the basics the easier the bigger stuff becomes. So my progress in a month of riding is backwheeling up 4 pallets, sidehopping onto 3, gapping about 1.5m, gap down 2m, and dropping about 8ft. The more you practise the easy stuff the easier the harder stuff becomes. Practise! Practise! Practise!
TomN
I find a break from riding and when a mint video comes out, after watching it, it makes me want to ride proper bad after and i seem to ride better like going smoother and bigger. skandy32
i started when i just turned 17, now a year and half on, i've suddenly hit this incredibally (SP!) quick progression period. Since i arrived at uni 2months ago my ability has shot up :D i recently got crankflips dialed on the back wheel, sometimes on the edge of drops :P , big concrete drops (8ftish), 180 bunnyhops, manuals for ever, and over bar height back wheels.... and rather large hooks. im impressing myself a loooot. And i think its all down to riding a good few hours everyday!! as zanneslover said, practise practise practise, and it pays off!!
Burton
Well when i first started i set goals that i am doing with ease now, which seems silly. I never thought i'd be at the stage i am now though, tis crazy. I have progressed slightly over the past month, just getting things easier, more controlled, and ups to front-to-back on fences at the mo' :P. The thing is, you need to set yourself realistic goals, that can be acheived with a few months or so. This way, it shows more progression, rather than something too hard.
