Camcorder

I spent ages looking up this stuff when I bought my camera and I love it. The one thing I don't like about it is that I can't do time lapse recording.

The camera is a Panasonic NV-GS200. 10X optical zoom and 500X digital zoom (though digital zoom on any camera is not a big deal anyway - quality suffers)

It carries an SD card (comes with an 8mb one - small) and you can take photos (saved to SD) while you record footage.

It's a 3CCD camera (most of these tend to be quite expensive) so it gives excellent colour quality and I was well impressed with it's low light ability.

There is a 2/5" LCD screen on the camera and it comes with a remote control. It also comes with a hand held microphone/remote type thing so you can do "news report" style recording.

Another feature I particularly like is burst mode camera pics. This will not work while recording video but when you switch to record to SD card it will fire off 10 (I think) quick succession shots.

Come to think of it - while in SD mode you can record MPeg4 video to the card so the burst mode would probably work while recording video to the card.

There is no touch screen as can be found on many sonys but the controls themselves are simple. The whole package is really compact (one of the reasons I bought it as it has to fit into a smallish pelicase before I shove it into the back of my kayak)

I'd recommend one of these to anyone if you can get it at the kind of price I did. I bought over ebay from a seller in Hong Kong and I couldn't be happier. The price in total was 750 Euro so about 500 GBP.

Oh yeah - it's got it's own popup flash too

good point from above

might depend on if you want to edit, for example the best editing software(my view) is sony vegas and that works better with sony cams for an obvious reason.

you might want to look at a handycam hc40 they record to mini dv and have a touch screena dn rarly ever f**k up plus i use one :ermm: B) , but if you dont want to edit you can get a handy cam that will record straight to dvd but youll need and extra bit of money for that.

hope this helps tom tom B) :D

That Panasonic one looks good!

If you cant find it, go with Sony. I have a DCR-TRV18E - its 5 years old, MiniDV and its been good for all web stuff. Only thing is, they dont make my camera any more.. so.

Basically, all u need i the cheapest MiniDV camcorder you can get. Doesnt really need 3CCD if you're just starting out... BUT DV In/Out is a really good idea, cos then you can put vids you've edited back onto MiniDV tape and show mates out on rides before u put it on the web and stuff... all good fun!

Check http://www.ebuyer.com for some bargains.
