I dont think its worth it.

Most people dont use the full quality of their cameras on the internet as it is. My camera records at 1megapixel ( 2Mp CCD) and with firewire/softwear limitations captures at 720x576 pixels, its crazy quality ( Sony HC-85). I'd say looknig at that kittens clip it would be as good, especially with the lighting and such of that clip. I know my camera isn't the best either, there are better mini DV cams with better lenses etc out there. But to retain that full quality works out at a rediculus file size.

When I put videos on the web, I compress using mpg, and it goes down to 352x288 pixels. If we were using HD I'm sure people would need to do similar, otherwise it would take days/week to downlaod and destroy bandwidth.

The first step I wouldc say is to find better compressors/bigger files so that we use the current crop of cameras to their full potential, then after that maybe HD would be good.

I would add a couple of things here. In the digital camera world megapixels jump all the time. My Canon is 'only' 6 megapixels, and you can go upto 16.7 megapixels before you get into silly pro-kit, but I know my camera holds up. It's not a leader, but it holds up. Quality kit has a tendancy to last when it comes to results...

However, given the chance, I will always work to the highest quality at a master stage. Results can be downsampled, but it's hard to upsample well! Plus something shot in HD now will look better, for longer. Stick to MiniDV, and in three years time, it will look rubbish, just as Hi-8 does now.

Finally, some people only care about moves and lines when it comes to vids/pics, others appreciate high quality. People like myself and trialsmedia take pride in what we do, and push to present our work the best we can. Some may not feel it's needed, but we do it to try and make things better or more interesting. Better that than use camera phones for everything ;-)

my understanding of pixel amounts was the size of the image that it takes. so having a huge picture isnt going to be better, surely?

maybe someone can shed some light somehow (Y)

Wow- you get to learn HD cams?! My Uni has just taught me how to use a Sony DSR 300... (Y)

Personally, I'd buy the HD cam now if you're thinking of using it for client-based projects. You'll be kicking yourself in 3years time when a client rings you up for an HD promo piece... You will have a lot more experience than the majority of freelancers if you buy it now. And even if you buy and decide it's not what you want, I'll take it off you for a couple of quid... :D

What/where are you studying btw?

Typically, higher number of pixels = higher quality? Which is why people go for higher Megapixel cameras.

Exactly my thoughts... but would I be kicking myself.. more like jumping for joy surely haha?!

Im studying BA(Hons)Digital Screen Arts... im in my second year.

And for the guy who thinks being arty or caring about your video work is all about crazy angles, with nothing but blue sky, ur basing that on the brighton trials video and nothing more from what I can see. Innovation is happening all the time.. EVERY rider can be artistic and creative... the sky is the limit lol!

Umm, yes. Kind of. There are issues relating to DSPs, and lens quality, but the big difference with a digital SLR is the sensor is much bigger than that of a point and shoot type digital camera. For long, boring reasons, this means that images taken with a digital SLR will be able to withstand greater upsizing, contain more shadow detail, and have far, far better DoF control than a digital compact.

Here endeth the dullness (Y))

If you think we dont need HD for trials, im sorry, but your mind and imagination is simply bland <_< - Im sure after experiments etc, everybody's minds will be altered.

What did you have in mind? Is your imagination and mind really limited by the quality of the picture ^_^

Alter our minds, explain it boyo :P

Sorry for the bump...

What I meant was saying that is like saying 'we dont need HD for anything'... well, we do.. eventually all we watch will be in HD.

It wont happen for a little while web wise, but as soon as people upgrade their computers, get faster net connections, HDV will take over - this is just based on innovation, nothing else.

I think everything that needed to be said has been, so over and out. If you're baffled, PM me lol.

Isnt everyones?

Why have an Xbox when you could have a SNES, why have a DVD when you could have a BetaMax, why have an LCD TV when you could have a black and white CRT, why have a 10 megapixel digital camera when you could have a disposable 35mm?

I think everyones, including yours are limited by the quality of a picture

Thanks for your comments people. Most of the comments are helpful... Ratcliff proved a good point about the reduction of resolution when exporting/compressing for the web.

Surely that's not true... If you have a standard mini dv camera and you make a movie of approx 300megs you compress it (for arguments sake) to 10 times it's original quality and get a movie that is now 30megs and 10 times poorer quality. However, with high definition you start of with the same movie but obviously it is much better quality, we'll say 600megs, you then reduce by 10 times and end up at 60megs and 10 times poorer quality HOWEVER although it is poorer quality through compression you have to bear in mind that you won't be compressing it down to the same quality as a mini dv... that's like buying an apple and cutting it in half and throwing half away because it's bigger than all the rest... it's wasteful.

So although you will be compressing the quality will still be much better, and to be honest im on 56gay at the moment and I simply do not bother downloading videos... So it won't matter much anyhow. When I have BB i'm not gonna mind waiting longer for a HD, quite the contrary - I would prefer it :P

Any help? p.s. all the figures I used were off the top of my head, so no smart arses please :D

I know ive said 'Standard MiniDV it is then!'... but I think HD is a good idea - cos my current camera has been with me for about 5 years now... so if people invest now, it will last!!

Jonny.

Will you be selling your old camera then dear chap? What model/make is it?

Ta, Sam

Thanks for your comments... I wish HDV compression worked like u mentioned above, would be ace... well, at least I dont think u can compress it like that!! Ive not really tried with HDV yet. Heres hoping.
