Take the front cog size, and divide it by the rear. This gives you the ratio. For instance, 20:20 would a ratio of one. That means for every one time you pedal around, the wheel goes round once. You basically use it to find out what cog sizes to use when you have to change either size. For instance, if you are running 22 tooth at the front and are changing to freewheel, but want to keep the same ratio, you use that calculator to play around and find the closest one.
