I'm after a front disc brake with good modulation but also allot of hold when needed. I have tried the avid bb7 on a few of my friends bikes and it seems quite nice, but recently i have seen one snap on the caliper body which put me off a little. Another of my friends has a hope mono trials which feels very nice and smooth, but this has had leaking problems after extended use (probably just been set up wrongly?) Krisboats Posted October 19, 2005 Report Share Posted October 19, 2005 my 2005 magura louise was a fit and forget job. it literally took like 5 minutes to fit it, and most of that was getting the grip off the bars. Mines a 160mm rotor on a stock bike so is quite small but it had awesome stopping power in it and allowed me to do majorly long bunnyhops to nose manuals until i managed to get a load of cleaning shit (and now brake fluid as well) sprayed all over the caliper and it went into my pads. I'm gonna get a new set of pads soon though and maybe a bigger rotor like a leeson rotor because it looks pimping. theres also like no sticking out parts or any smaller bits to it that you can break off, and i havn't heard of many with leaking problems. Waynio Posted October 19, 2005 Report Share Posted October 19, 2005 Hope mono trial!!!! supa dupa power, an you could literally pin your bike on the front wheel with feathering the brake. there awesum. best disc brake iv used in ages. my best option before that was the Hope mono m4 with a 180 or a 200mm rotor. i wouldnt use any other brake!!!!im thinking of trying out a vee brake again but i dont think it will last long on the bike as i know how good my disc brake is. I am now on my 5th avid caliper in two years, and the power with my current one is crap. By far the best disk I have used is a magura marta and that was just a 160mm disk too. I also recken magura calipers are much better for the harsh world of trials. The hopes and most other calipers have the hose going in the side with a 90 degree connection, the magura has the hose going directly in the top, so you cant hit it on rocks (like I did with my hope, ending my ride!!) the only bad things about the marta is the lever blade, hit it and it wobbles like a bitch! So do your self a favour and stick a shimano xt lever on isntead. Also....get the 180 rotor. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Well worth the money, amazing from day one in both the rain and shine. I havent had to maintain it at all and its runs very smooth and sharp. Cant fault it really. I have a 200mm front rotor and it's my first rotor over 160mm so it might bias me, anyway the hope is better because: - My lever and body has taken a lot of shit and it's still all good. - Best brake for modulation, bite and hold... ever. - Looks pimp to say the least. - Easy to bleed cos' it's an open system. Either way its f**ked now Id just say get an avid. they're cheaper than most discs and work pretty well. RicH_87 Posted October 19, 2005 Report Share Posted October 19, 2005 ain't bothred reading the thread but i'm just gonna suggest the Avid Juicy Seven, powerful good modulation good build quality user freindly quite pricey but most discs are alround great disc, although i haven't used mine much, its been 100% reliable and i can't see any signs of it giving up the ghost any time soon. you wouldn't be dissapointed if you got one. poopipe Posted October 19, 2005 Report Share Posted October 19, 2005 im quite pleased with my 05 louise FR. it makes a funny noise about halfway between nothing and lock (apparently i need my mounts facing or something ) but it works great and ive not had to fiddle with it yet (its been a few months). also, (it may be because its new or the way it was set up when i got it) the lever doesnt feel all flappy like other disks if tried out -its got a nice firm feel to it. i dunno how much they cost compared to anything else cos it came with my new bike Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Recently bought an adapter so now have 180 and its better for modulation and hold and feel. Avids do bite very well though, but Im not sure about them other than that. I have had one problem with my mono when I feel off a rail and caught the hose mount into the caliper, so it leaked a bit. But f**k me was it easy to bleed. Just had to tighten up the bolt that I knocked loose and bleed. Only problem I have with mine is when hanging off the front wheel static, say of the edge of a wall looking to wheel swap it up, and there isnt to much of a lip for the tyre to grip to, then it sometimes slips backwards. It does have all my weight on it pulling it backwards and down but it can get annoying. I dont know if any brake would let you do this or not really. I wasn't super impressed with the modulation of mine at first, but I bedded it in, and it's perfect now, pretty much. Just holds *so* well, it's crazy.
