Digital Slr Cameras?

Well, the Nikon D70 looks better than the Canon 300d, which are both about £600 i think.

Although the 300d has more megapixels, the D70 has better functions if i remember correctly. Either way, i want the Nikon over the Canon.

Edit: These are the two cheapest ones i know of, and i dont really know much.

Canon EOS 350d. Costs around £650 for a kit, which includes an 18-55mm lense, 256mb card off Canon, and loads of vouchers up to £100 off for lenses and flashes if you want to take it more seriously in the future.

Quite a bit for a camera, but seeing as lots of mags have voted it the best camera for under £1000, you can't go wrong.

Has the DIGIC processor which is designed and manufactured by Canon themselves. You wont find this in any other camera (most others use a generic processor modified for camera use). Because of this you get longer battery life, much faster operation (3fps continuous), and less noise.

Also, all Canon lenses are top notch glass lenses. The D70 Nikon etc come with Plastic lenses, which aren't fantastic to be honest.

The 350 is also one of the more durable digital SLR's on the market, Nikon's are ok but very "plastic" like, and they have had some reliablity problems recently, with some Digital SLR's being recalled.

Any more info PM me. I would definately go for the 350d if you can afford to, imo you won't find a camera that comes close for under a 1000.

The D70 is now discontinued so you wont get hold of one but they have replaced it with the new D70s which only has minor upgrades like a bigger back screen. Also you'll be lucky to find one for £600 lol, there more like £800 with kit lens.

Yes the canon does have 8 MP compared to Nikon's 6MP but if you make 2 A4 prints of the same photo it'll be very hard to tell the difference. Theres no poinit in going for a camera because of the extra mp's, because it's rarely noticeable.

So I guess your a Canon man? lol

As for the Nikon coming with a 'plastic' lens, thats rubbish. The standard 18-70mm kit lens is fantastic peice of kit, as are all the other nikor lenses. If you look, the difference between buying a d70s with or without lens is about £180 but the same lens on it's own is £330, so get the kit lens it's a bargin.

The 350D does not feel as solid as the Nikon, it's proven. I've played with both and the Nikon felt so much better. The 350D is smaller and if you have large hands it might feel more like a toy. I know that if I spent £800 on a camera i'd want it to feel like it was worth every penny.

A camera that is better for under £1000 is the 20D, thats amazing and I think you can get the body for about £850 without lens.

But to be honest it dosen't really sound like you have a clue, are you into photography at all? I wouldn't go buying a digi slr for 'snaps.'

If you don't know whats good and whats bad then to be honest you don't deserve one.

Im getting my D70s in about a week hopefully but theres a production problem at the moment. I think it's something to do with Nikon moving a major warehouse in europe.

Anway, any more questions give us a shout

Cheers

So you're a Nikon man are you? I've heard good things about both cameras to be honest, you'd be happy with either really. There are minor differences and one might appeal to someone slightly more but it's horses for courses. Apparently the Nikon has a nicer lens and screen, whereas the Canon is a slightly better body, and the CMOS (or is it a CCD?) is better. But there's not much in it as far as I know.

CCD :$

Im not really a canon or Nikon man as I dont have either of the kit but I guess im nikon seems as im getting one (Y)

Another things Dave, make your choice wisley if you do get one as once you buy say a Canon then you stick with canon, so that when you buy other lenses etc they all fit, you can change makes if you like but you'll have to change everything so you can do that if your rich :ermm:

hello

I would say.... by the looks of your camera knowledge.... dont bother with a DLSR!!! have you used a film SLR? i would recomend buying oneof those wayyyy before the digitial stuff. that will teach you how to really use a camera manually.

If you dont want to use the manual features of a camera. DONT bother wasting money on a fancy SLR. Just get a point and shoot thing with a sporty mode for the trials shots.

Before u buy a DSLR, you've really got to do your own research, people on here will cast they're own opinion on choice, but it sounds like you haven't really looked into it yourself so far....

as a starter there are 2, maybe 3 most popular DigitalSLRs on the market at present. As i said, if you've used a filmSLR before u will probably have a prefernce to make, hence people prefering nikon over canon etc..... personally i like canon, but thats because i have used an awful loot of they're stuff in the past.....

the 3 cameras.....

NIKON D50

NIKON D70s

CANON 350D

all about 500 - 700 pounds, the 70 and 350d are in a tight competitive battle, at the end of the day will do the same job in terms of specification, and the D50 is a cheaper nikon one, probably the cheapest on the market.

Before you buy a DSLR i think you need to understand the following terms....

megapixels

shutterspeed

aperture

depth of field

what filters do

and what you want the camera to actually do, if you dont use it to its full potential its likely to be not worth buying!

hope that helps..... all im really trying to say is dont throw your money away at something your not 100% sure about. Some people (like myself) work our arses off to save for such a piece of equipment, and know far too much about them, and get quite annoyed at people that buy them for "auto snaps" :ermm: if you see what i mean

anyhoo im quite welcome to answer any queries camera related....

Nah, it is a CMOS actually, I just looked it up. Not that it's particularly important though ;)

Nope it's the Canon with the CMOS sensor, which is far more advanced and gives better quality that a standard CCD. I'm not going to type an essay for the reasons why, as the info is widely available on the net.

And in regards to lenses... I'm sorry, but Canon lenses are pretty much reknowned for being the best in the business. I'm not saying the Nikkor lenses are poor, I'm just saying when compared to a Canon, they are in different leagues. 70% of professional photographers use Canon lenses.

Why does that bother you, sheer jealosy, cos i have money and you dont does a newbie with a chris king bother you, how the hell can having a decent camera be a disadvantage in anyway.

Well it can be pretty hard to get any results if you don't know what you're doing. Or you can just set it on auto mode and take snaps, but then you may as well just get a normal digital camera like Joe said.

Simon...what is your problem with everyones grammer.??

Dont forget constant moaning about the bike pics thread ^_^

Dave: Seriously mate I wouldn't go jumping in at the deep end, it's much like getting your first trials bike and going out trying to touch a 50" wall without any practice. You would look good trying to attempt that but you wouldn't make it, making you look stupid. Same as the camera, by the sounds of it you dont have a bloody clue but for your first proper camera your going and buying a digital slr straight off. You'll look good with it but the results wont.

I doubt very much people like myself are advising against you getting it because they are jealous

It's like the ridinig thing, alot of people can tap higher than me but does that make me jealous of them, no!

Just get something thats good and will do the job just fine, like the S5500. You need to learn basics first. A digi slr is for the serious amature/pro, im afraid you don't fall into this catagory.

Anyway i'll leave it to you, it's your call but I wouldn't bother.

Rob :)

Off topic: i thought aperture and depth of field were the same thing....?

any way.....i have a d50 and i really love it, although looking now how much cheaper the d70 is i wish i got that, plus its a lot cheaper to get a fish eye for a d70...and btw jessops do price matches! just thought that might help, best bet is try and find some photography reviews forums tutorials and try to understand the basics, go on the Nikon site etc. thats what i did before i got mine, great fun , i love it !
