Mark W
Hello. I bought an Avid BB_ disc from Nick Garland on here, and as a disc virgin I was just hoping for some help setting it up/bedding it in. It's set up as is, but the way that I've got it set up it has it so it locks with the lever really close to the bar. However, this means that because of the way the pads move, there's not all that much modulation for a lot of the lever travel (it's a 203mm disc though, so that might be it...). Is there a way of setting it up so that the locking point is still near the bar, but it has more progressive modulation? I poured water over the rotor once and then scrubbed the brake loads, and it went louder and had a lot more modulation to it. However, that went fairly quickly... Do I just need to repeat that process a few times to get it to stay like that, or is it not gonna happen? Gonna change the cable to a Linear Slic soon enough, hopefully, for a bit less friction and a stiffer outer to reduce some sponginess... Thanks for any help/tips though :P Mark
downhill_rob2@hotmail.com
Im pretty sure that on the caliper, there should be a big red thingy that when you turn it with your fingers, it clicks, it also moves the pads in towards the rotor, one pads should be just slightly touching the rotor, because its only like a single pot brake, and only one pad moves, other wise when you pull your brake, your rotor will bend slightly. Also, try pullin the cable through very slightly on the caliper to make it less pull on the lever?
Davetrials
Its on or off mark, thats what avids are for.
Mr Motivator
Keep chucking water on it. Don't let it heat up too much though.
Dan Campbell
Its on or off mark, thats what avids are for. This is fairly realisitic. Untill you get used to the grabbyness of the avid you will find it's very sudden and there is little to no modulation when properly bedded in. If you ride it for a few days being careful not to jam the brake on too hard you will slowly get used the extra power and will soon be able to modulate pretty well. You ride a mod dont you? If so a 205mm avid is probably overkill big style. Tic runs his mod with the 165 and it is easily powerful enough. My 185 on my stock is pretty much about right. Just give yourself some time to get used to it and you will love it :P Dan Also incase you havn't been warned they over heat way too easily, be wary of this if riding big hills etc.
Tom Booth
buy a speed dial lever, make avids modulate :P my speed dial 5 works a treat.
Rossi
Slap some muddy water on the disc. Bedded my disc in nicely. Rossi.
Mark W
buy a speed dial lever, make avids modulate :) my speed dial 5 works a treat. Got a front SD7 here. How convenient :P Nah, the XTR feels OK, really. I've set the lever so it starts off way further in than usual (the little clip that the end of the cable clips into is starting to show), and it feels OK really... Cheers for the tips though :P

Cheers for the tips though :P :P if you want it to modulate better, put some 3-in-1 oil on the rotor (Y) ner, i would just say set it up so that the rotor is closerto the pad that moves, therefore it has to bend the rotor over, making it more modulate-y lol Will
Luke Drewery
I bought my avid brand new (when the pads are all glazed and shiny) and all I had to do once it was set up was pour cold water over the whole brake then ride really fast and scrub the brake hard. After that one bedding on period it is mint and has been ever since. :turned:
Rich Pearson
Avids are wierd Mark, they sort of have two stages of bedding in. For the first few days they're absolute shite, then after bedding in (muddy water, brake scrub, etc) they get super grabby, as in locks harder than any magura. After about a month they should start to lose just enough of that bite and get the modulation back. As for the lever pull length, you really just need to play around with the barrell adjusters on the lever and the red adjusters on the caliper until you get it how you like it. But a decent set of cables (nothing flash, I'm running well maintained deore cables and jackets) and a good lever (XTR, XT, not nuts over the avids, but meh...) are two very good starting points. Hope that helps. Rich

Just give yourself some time to get used to it and you will love it :S As Dan said the 165 on my Megamooo is awsome.com! I think 205 on a mod is gonna kill you, marky is gonna die :P As far as bedding it in goes, find a hill, ride down it dragging the disk, splash water all over the disk, repeat over and over and you will feel it gettting better each time. Im sure you have lots of hills in Wales but if you dont just replace the riding down a hill with - pelt it round as fast as your trials gearing will let you while dragging the brake. After this has been done get out there and ride away and it will get better still :P I also have my leavers travelling really far into the bars, everyone always complains about it when they get on my bike! But I find the best way is to have the barrel adjuster on the lever wound right in and to adjust the lever travel at the outer red dial. Have the static pad one notch out from where it would be rubbing the disk and then play with the other red dial untill you get a nice lever travel. If you need to make more subtle adjustments use a small amount of the barrel adjuster. You will eventually get used to the brake and be able to modulate it but I still think Mark is gonna die a painful over the bars death :)
Mark W
Cheers for the tips Tic, not the jinx though you whore :) Because of the set-up with the cable, the lever adjuster is fully in anyway, so I've just been fagging around with the dial on the caliper. Apart from seemingly every bolt in the whole f**king brake (adaptor bolts and rotor bolts) coming loose in one ride, it all seems to be fine now :S Feels way better now it's been watered a lot. Quite a lot of modulation as long you're gentle with the lever really. Might 'downgrade' to a 185 or 160 at some point though... We'll see :P It's amazing how much hold it has though... Hanging the front wheel partially off stuff doing endos just to test it, and finding it works is weird...
nb88
205 avid on a mod :S you are mad! lol, i find my friends 165 on a mod is far too powerful. when i bedded mine in i just used a bit of muddy water and rode about grabbing the brake (not rubbing it), worked fine after 1 ride.
