if you ride a comp and you ride a stock bike why do you have to use gears and if so what is the minimum amount of gears you need to run in a comp

i cant be bothered with them but i would love to ride a comp

and as the BMXers say to me gears are for quears apparently

Im the same i hate using gears on my bike, in my opinion you should not have to have gears if you dont want to ride with them. I mean it is not that big of a deal if you havent got them and a lot more people would enter comps.

i think the rule is you need 5 or 6 (cant remember which) gears and you have to be able to change through the whole range (no good just having the cassette and a tensioner) however lots of people run a steel sprocket in the chosen trials gear and the rest carbon fiber sprockets - meaning you can change through the whole range and ride in every gear but technically you only have one gear you can do anything in.

i find this quite funny as the rule is obviously outdated and if people are doing this it undermines the whole system - which can only be good (N)

yeah i can understand where your comming from about why bother with gears, YMSA competitions allow people to enter if you dont have gears. i thought those carbon fibre sprockets looked ace but a abit pricey! was it whitehurst designs that made them??

so i would have to put a cassette on but still only use 1 gear thats so stupid ss all the way

mate said to me if you had a with gears he could wheeliehop further but i think if you just get a better technique and build up on muscle you would any way

I totally disagree with all of you, the rule should stand. If stocks were aloud to run singlespeed the developers would just start making 20" bikes that can take 26" wheels (not litrely (Y) )

The thing is the only things the separates 20" + 26" is wheel size and gears so if you get rid of the gears then whats the point in two categories the bikes will end up pretty much the same!

Oh and as the rules stand you need 6 working gears, in the Uk this is only for the British champs but due to stupid insurance reasons bikes can't be scrutiniered anymore so unless someone makes an official complaint about your lack of gears then nothing will be said.

I don't no of any clubs in the Uk that enforce the 6 gear rule for their normal events so you should be ok

(N) Go and enter some comps you'll love it.

I also think they should get rid of the two categories, and just have everyone ride the same stuff in the same category with whatever bike they want. If they think riding a mod or stock puts them at a disadvantage then they are being stupid and they should change bike to whichever type they think gives people an advantage. I would see this as fair and even.

Although i don't ride or attend comps, dont know the rules, and have no interest i'm them really, so what do i know :ermm:
