My names steve irving, and...........

Trials for me has been my passion for years since I was around 16 year old. Im now 22 and have not rid for almost 2years now. Ive been out on and off but lost the spark to go out and ride. I watched evolve, contact, revolution, kranked 3 etc until I wore them out, trials was everything to me. I did some comps and did ok but felt more at home practicing on my own. I just lost interest and now feel really kinda gutted that I "could" have been really great now. I got quite good and had practiced many many many hours........What Id like advise on is any possible reasons why this happens, being off the bike for so long and just not riding. Its costantly been on my mind like a splinter in my brain, it gets me really down that Im not as I used to be and dont ride like I did when I go out and try. I get back pains when I go out and try, my dad says because the muscles have wasted away because I have not done any full on excersise that trials gives for that long. I dont know how you can help but you being my idiol for so many years and looking up to you as a trials rider.......The easy answer i know is go out and ride but it just aint happened. Ive lost count of the amount of times Ive gone out determined and tried to get back into it, but no..........Im kinda ina mental block....I feel huge regret that its been so long off the bike, and a recurring thought of "Godsake I could have been awesome by now IF Id stuck at my riding" I just dont know what to do, I feel trials has moved on and left me behind and now Im too old to catch up.....................I turned 22 on june 5th and just dont have realistic hopes of being any good again and getting anywhere in trials...... Any comments, advise, comments, negative or positive Id appreciate it

I had a stint back on it and started to get back in the groove but am still having bad back problems...Had physio a year ago...and STILL have bad problems....Doctors are fffkin useless.....Im FINALLY going for an xray tom at the hospital..the 1ST 1 Since I injured my back !!!!!! over a year and the doctors didnt send me for a xray after all this time.....bloody diabolical.......Im hoping nothing will show up....ie nothing wrong with the alignment etc..no disc problems..unless i will shit myself worrying........That will identify the problem as muscle damage as the physio said ages ago...... Im getting into power yoga now to build my strength and get supple..... Im confident it will really help me............

The END

Hey Steve,

I'm no doctor, but here's what I might suggest...

Basically, trials is an "inch by inch" sport. By that, I mean you tend to learn the basic moves, then just apply them to larger and larger obstacles.

Your body and brain know how to do these bigger moves, simply because you've done them before, so your body is able to. However, a by-product of the "inch by inch" learning is that your body gradually gets stronger and stronger. This means that you have the strength to pull that 8ft gap, that 10ft drop, that 5ft up. However, if you leave the sport for any length of time, you'll lose the conditioning of these muscles. After a break of 2 years, your 'trials specific' muscles will have pretty much gone. Therefore, when you try and do the moves that you know how to do, you're far more prone to tearing/straining muscles. Also, your body will need to get back into the groove of riding, and get used to that hunched position more often.

So basically, you'll have to limit yourself 'til you've built up the strength again.

Anyway, back to the mind-set - I've quit trials about... 5 times or more now. I've only been riding for about 4 and a half years, so in that time I've only *really* been riding for about 3 - 3 1/2 years or so, at a guess. But each time, I've come back, just 'cos once you've been bitten by the bug, you've got to do it again. It's all pervasive - after you ride trials, you start looking at cities and architecture and rocks and shit differently to normal people - you're constantly looking for lines, thinking about how to do stuff. Couple that ot the fact that your body will constantly be working out how to improve it's methods for doing stuff (why you can stop riding for 2 weeks or so, get back into it and your balance will be better, say), and you're basically irresistibly drawn back to riding.

If you've felt that 'splinter' for 2 years, it means you need to do it again, basically, to scratch that itch, as it were.

We all have periods when we don't want to ride as much, when it becomes a bit blase. However, you get back into it fresh again and you get that kick-ass feeling you get when you first started, except you've gone further now so you can push on again.

Just take care of your back, start small and work up again, and you'll be back doing rad stuff and learning to go huge in no time :)

Good luck and stick with it (Y)

Mark

Weirdly enough, I had all of that stuff at points whilst I was riding (Y) It usually just went. But yeah, you will feel frustrated by not riding to your previous standard, but just set short term goals, basically. Think to yourself "I'll get up that wall by the end of the week", and make them realistic. Just ease yourself into it, 'cos if you go mental too soon, you'll just tear yourself apart and set yourself back further.

Very encouraging words from Onzaboymark . Sure technique and technology have moved on , but as long as you're able to enjoy riding at whatever level , you're doing well regardless of age . Your body will "remember"

and reassume trials mode , making it both easier to concentrate on riding , and causing less injury . There is no measuring progression beyond what you tell yourself you are happy / proud of .

This topic also applies for me, got into trials at like 16, quit a few years later, now 22 and taking it back up.

I'm hoping that it won't take too long to get back to where I was before, but yea as Onzaboymark says the limit will probably be physical. I quit trials because where I was living in Hampshire there were hardly any other riders and then I moved to London and started doing other things, that was pretty much it. Now I'm taking it up again because when I realised my bike needed replacing I started eyeing up trials bikes (Y)

I am 25 and have been riding for a fair few years and I am currently riding better than ever...

I used to get stressed when riding, that I couldn't do this or that. Then I thought balls to it, just go out and have fun do what i wanna do and have a laugh on my bike. As a result I am now uping higher, gapping further etc.

so maybe just take a step back, have a play on some smaller walls, try a few different techniques and get yourself used to be on the bike again.

Im in the same boat too guys!!!

Started riding trials back in '98 (!!) when i was 15, im now 23 and hadnt ridden for nearly 5 years!

Anyways, got the pallets out one day when i was bored and had a muck about and found i could still do the moves and i enjoyed myself!! Ive now got right back into my riding and am awaiting a new frame with goodies to arrive asap!!!

Get out and ride and enjoy the fresh air, safe in the knowledge that even a small up onto a wall is more than 99% of the general public could manage!!

hehe my birthdays on the 5th of june aswell, when im not on my bike say if im injured or broken a part on my bike i feel empty because there is nothing else to do round here, part from helpin mike with his papers lol

what gets me motivated to ride is the fact that there are so many people out in the trials world who are better than me and i want to progress and get to the same level as them and im not going to do that unless i go out and practice

the thing that motivates me to go out and ride, even if it just me is watchin the level what trials is at now for example neil and cls and other riders who go bigger than me and smoother. even if it by yourself if your doing what you love then you wont have a crap time, every time i go to the trading estate i will try a new thing wether i make it or not dosent matter because im pushin myself to learn new stuff

get a few zoo vids and get a mp3 player get your favourite songs on it and go enjoy yourself

If you're finding it hard to actually get out on your bike and start riding just because you've got a mental block, find someone else that rides trials in your area and go out with them.

About that getting back into the groove thing, just mess around and pimp it up on some curbs outside of your house or find some benches. If there's a school near where you are go there, there's bound to be something there.

Hope my post helps, although it's probably as useful as a wet towel....
