moo
right iv bought a hope trials dics and set it up according to the manual but the lever comes way back to the handle bars and is spongy, when i pump the lever the spongyness goes and the travel in the lever reduces but it goes spongy n crap straight after. there are no visable leaks iv not shortened or touched the hose. any ideas on how to reduce travel in the lever or what is causing this as its really p!ssing me off and its raining (Y)

Tony Harrison
I had this problem and re-bled the disk 3 times, but still no difference. Then I faced the disk mount, which means using a special tool to ensure the caliper is perfectly aligned with the disk. After this the disk was unbelievable - just absolutely perfect. With an open system, if the disk is at an angle to the caliper the pads adjust further from the disk and hence there is more lever movement. You also could try using washers to make sure the caliper is aligned properly.
matthewholdsworth
youve bought the brake from new i assume? if so the oil probably hasnt settled right, pump the lever for a long time, not just 3 or 4 times, i spent 10 mins doing mine the other day after cleaning my pistons. works fine now. if you take your reservoir cap off dont screw your diaphragm up, when re-tightening your cap dont over-tighten, just nip the bolts up dont crank em in or this will cause your diaphragm to go curvey (it should be perfectly flat or it wont work. you may also need to spot face your fork mounts, you also must make sure the disc runs straight in the caliper, an even distance from each pad. finally it, if u look from the end of your bars towards the lever you will see a space for a 2mm allen key, this adjusts the reach of your lever, screw it in to increase lever reach. this has been known to sort out the problem of your lever pulling to the bars. spongyness is either your brake isnt bedded in, get the rotor muddy wet and generally covered in muck, or its due to lack of alignment. dont do everything at once, try one at a time
