MaXsteri
All i ever seam to use my trials bike for is spins and street riding so ive decided to get a bmx. Im clueless when it comes to bmx's and need help choosing a bike. How much do i need to spend to get a reasonable bike? i dont want to spend too much incase i dont get on with bmx, but at the same time i want something reasonable or i wont stick with it. Is a budget of £250 enough for a bmx or should i be looking at spending more? or looking second hand? All im interested in is street riding, its very unlikely i will go anywhere near a park or dirt jumps, and i want a bike with decent brakes as all the bmx's ive ridden have had shocking brakes. Im quite short and like spins so i guess i should be looking for a bike with a short frame/wb Can people recommend some bikes to me?
Tony Harrison
£250 will get you a decent enough BMX, but the brakes won't be up to much. You could try plazmatic pads but in the end I bought new levers (Dia-tech Dirty Harry) and new calipers (Odyssey Evolver). The brakes cost £100 in total on top of the price of the bike, but the performance is worth it. Look at the Hoffman Disrupter, they're excellent. Also see if anywhere is selling the '05 model Disrupter IL1 cheap, as you might find that for under £250. I paid £270 last November and RRP was around £330, so you'd be getting a bargain. Comes with... chrome rear rim, Odyssey 13T freewheel, 3-pc cranks and the forks have U-brake mounts (and a brake).
MaXsteri
If they brakes on a £250 bmx are going to be shocking then i will order new brakes at the same time as i order the bike. Seeing as that will take it up into the £350 region would it be worth be spending £350 on a complete instead? or do the majority of complete bikes come with shocking brakes as standard? Fishwog
Almost all complete bikes upto things like the Fly pantera full build (£799.99) comes with pretty standard brakes, and 99% of the time, it's the pads that let them down... I ride park, dirt and a bit of street, and find after a while you don't need an amazing brake at all, but I would suggest getting some Plaz fly pads, and toeing them in  Oh yeah, you should try park aswell, if you have the bike for it, at some point maybe when your more confident on it, you should definately give it a go, it feels great flowing around a park :) Brake: Good levers: Diacompe Dirty Harry (2 fingers) Diacompe GoldFinger (1 finger) Odyssey monolevers (trigger :( ) Good Calipers: Odyssey Evolver calipers Fly brake S+M revenge brake Diacompe Magic990 Make sure you get an Odyssey slic calbe (or similar) aswell, they run nice and smooth, you can barspin if you wish, and the cable doesn't rattle about due to the stiffness of the outer cable. Tony Harrison
On the whole brakes aren't that important to most BMX buyers. If you spend £350, chances are the upgrades will be... Front chrome rim Sealed BB Better pedals Full 4130 chromo frame Cassette hub Get the best bike you can afford, then get some plazmatic pads. They'll cost about £15 a pair, but are worth it. Run these on a clean chrome rim and the brake will be good. I bought a BMX for £270 then spent £100 on brakes, then £150 on a cassette rear wheel. You can just upgrade the bits when you want to. You don't have to buy totally new brakes straight away, just try the pads. Besides, you'll probably find you need a good brake less than you think... Michael Hardman
A set of plaz pads and some time setting your brake up will be best. I run plaz pads on a black rim and its fine apart from one time wehn I was usinf spokes for a cable stradle the brake didnt work and I ended up on a wall back first, sorted the spoke straddle thing out and its been fine since. I also add a bit of spray on glue on one side just to make sure.
Tony Harrison
Oh yeah, and if you run a gyro/detangler run twin cables all the way down from the lever. Dragonfly do one for the top part (lever to gyro) and then you can run Slic cables from the gyro to the caliper. But that's only if/when you buy new brakes. MaXsteri
Okay, thanks for the advice so far. The two bikes im considering at the moment are: WeThePeople Daredevil 2005 = £259.99 Hoffman Disrupter IL1 2005 = £279.99 Would either of those bikes be a good choice for what i want? and which one has a better spec? Tony Harrison
The WTP seems to be a bit better spec, as it has a chrome front rim and a sealed BB. Other than that they're quite close. Chrome rims give better braking performance, but then if you don't want a front brake it's irrelevant.
