Will Arnold
does dot 4 or 5.1 fluid damage seals of a caliper that have been designed to use mineral oil? does mineral oil damage seals of a caliper that have been designed to use dot 4 or 5.1 fluid? thanks very much  Will
JT!
You cannot put any DOT stuff in brakes that use mineral oil. Don't know much but i know that. Edited October 1, 2005 by JT!
Ali C
yep, putting mineral fluid in a dot system kills the seals.........putting dot in a mineral system killes the seals shame really

Ali C
you could buy the correct seals to fit the system, I am pretty sure hope sells mineral oil seals so people can use their levers on shimano brakes so they dont have to use the paddle shifters

tank_rider
if i remember correctly, the only difference between the old hope C2 and open 2 brakes was the lever. I cant really see any reason why a mini lever wouldnt work on that system. Why not give hope a ring themselves, im sure they will be able to give you a concrete answer and are still a small enough organisation to actually have time to answer pretty much any question you ask them  in response to your initial question though, mineral oil will cause dot seals to swell up, and dot fluid will eat the mineral oil seals. Ali C
I love those old skool levers  You could try hayes levers? not sure what piston size they have though, or if they take the same dot fluid.
Dan Clark
Why not a C2 lever?
Will Arnold
excellent, i may get a mini lever then  and i shall ring hope to confirm on monday :- also, i will look into the hayes levers..infact i have a spare hayes poston in the shed, gunna go and measure it ;) thanks! Will Why not a C2 lever? 10mm i believe
nmt_oli
From the looks of it, that brake is a C2 with a caliper half for fitting to non disk mouted frame. uprgrade to the old pro lever is probably the best bet, C2s are surprisingly powerful as they are, unless it will be on a tiny disk. could get ebc red pads as well, they will boost power. an open lever wouldnt work, as the pistons in the open/closed brakes are different. tey have different returning systems if i remeber correctly. An open lever would work, but not very reliably or consistently i believe. Oli
AdamR28
if i remember correctly, the only difference between the old hope C2 and open 2 brakes was the lever. The C2 caliper has return springs, so theyre slightly different I think. I once tried a Mini lever on an O2 caliper (same piston ratios as a Mono Trial) - it doesnt work. I seem to remember explaining about it to you on MSN Will
downhill_rob2@hotmail.com
Lol i have one of them old skool ones on the front of my jump bike, its shite! lol Iv somehow cracked the lever and the resevour shoots out if i pull it too hard :S lol

dave33
i think you need a hope hub to run that brake system!
