Custom Frame Geometry

Greetings

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I am going to weld myself a custom frame and therefore have a few questions to those, who have ridden many varieties of mod frames.

What I'm planning is as follows:

370mm chainstays

1015mm wheelbase

50mm bb rise (could you write me the advantages of a high bb i.e. 70mm on mod, as apposed to a low one?)

fork angle similar to most trials bikes arround.

So far I've been riding a mod bike, my style has become static ever since I got a CLS frame. From a rolling start I do pedalups and taphops.

Although I've been riding for over 5 years, I know little about frame geometry.

That's why I'm interested in your ideas about how to change the geometry so that it suits my style of riding (and will allow for b-hops and natural riding)

Cheers!

Id say that sounds good geometry- not too long, but probably good for power moves. Sorta like a monty 221 with slightly more reach, which is the one thing I think could be improved on a monty

55mm BB rise seems common now on mods, so 60 should be fine. BB rise has the advantage of giving you more space to "tuck" the bike up towards you in the air, before the backwheel hits you in the crutch! lol. This means you can go bigger, it also inspires more confidence when "upping", as you are higher up, so things seem smaller in perspective.

370mm stays seem good- IMO 362/3mm stays which are on a lot of bikes such as the koxx levelboss, echo team, etc, are a bit too short and seem to slightly limit the power you can but through the bike as it feels like the bike "loops out" from underneath you too fast before you can put all your power down. My monty 221 had 373mm stays to give you an idea, I found this was great.

1015 wheelbase isnt too long, but plenty long enough to give good leverage over the 370mm chainstays so the bike feels lightish on the backwheel, and gives enough reach, yet is still flickable.

How are you going to make a frame though? They are pretty hard to make- are you getting a proffessional frame builder to do it for you?
