Hobnobs
Im *hopefully* going to be getting a 2nd hand 221Ti, its 1 year old but has only been ridden for 7-8 months. I know the older monty's tend to crack when used with a profile, like this one has, but its a 2005 Ti so i thought the problem may have been solved. So basically, i want to know how many of you know anyone who has snapped either a 2004/5/6 monty and whether they used a profile. Im going to be using a king bmx, so dont really want my new frame to snap in a few days. Edited September 29, 2005 by Hobnobs
SQuiT-man
I snapped my 04 (I think its an 04 anyway- it doesnt have disk tabs) and I was using a profile, as was bongo before me. I think you should be ok as long as you dont put extra spacers on the inside of the chainstays (such as the ones that come with a profile), or accidentally physically stretch the chainstays out too much while fitting your wheel (Y)
Burton
Its a Monty. Uber light and cheesey. If it aint cracked now, then it will do soon.
Hobnobs
From experience?
Burton
Just peoples experiances. Like Matt Arkwright....i think hes cracked a few, not lasting longer than 8 months. Montys are just generally known for being comp and light weight. Therefore they arent stiff, heavy, dent-proof or super strong.
Hobnobs
Yeah i suppose, but has anyone cracked a 2005?
Burton
Yeah i suppose, but has anyone cracked a 2005? Yer, just talking to Matt, he cracked his '05 Monty in 3 months, but there again he ran the bestist hub (Y) (Profile).
Hobnobs
Humm de hummmm. Why oh why do they crack! Im guessing all these cracks are at the chainstay?

SQuiT-man
They arent that bad, a lot stronger than what people think and say. They are plenty stiff enough, and most 04s that I have seen cracked have cracked for a reason, e.g. running a profile with snail cams on the inside aswell (adds a few extra mm's of chainstay bendage), and/or abuse. Very few 05s have cracked really, I have only heard of a couple.
TomN
Don't run a Profile then, run an Eno instead saves you money and probably a longer last time to ride the Monty. As they do ride very nice (Y)
Hobnobs
My king is going to be run on whatever frame i have, so i guess ill have to think whether its worth it.
AdamR28
Just run the hub, tugs outside. Its a fact that your frame will break at some point anyway, no point stressing about it!
Hobnobs
Yeah, but my point is that its already 9 months old, and i dont want to spend £150 on a frame that will snap in the next month or two. I could save for a zona or something instead of wasting it!
AdamR28
Pretty good case with the Zona... puts things into perspective. £150 for a frame that *might* (but probably wont) break in a few days, or £200 for a 4.7lb frame thats well built and should last at least a year. Plus a fresh warranty. The geometries are totally different though...
Hobnobs
Nail on the head. If only onza would bring out another short frame, like the t-lite, that would last.
AdamR28
The T-Pro is pretty damn short (50mm reach and 35mm wheelbase less) than the Zip... but its no 950mm wheelbase 221Ti, hehe. ZOO Python Short? Echo Team Short?
Hobnobs
Nnot really a fan of either of those two frames aesthetically, but it looks as though they might be my only options. I've had a t-pro, it was nice, but i would rather not have another.
Mark W
Humm de hummmm. Why oh why do they crack! Im guessing all these cracks are at the chainstay? 110mm wide hub, 106mm wide spacing at the rear. If you run the hub nearer the front of the drop-outs too, it's splaying it further. 10lbs of shit into a 5lb bag. Something has to give
rickycoleman
you know its right...go for a t-mag, or just sell the king and get a new eno, and get a monty?
loffa
My mates Monty 221 ti cracked on the right chainstay near the BB, and he was using a Monty disk hub.
Hobnobs
Hah sell the king, eat my arse. Maybe monty should think when they make their next frame, funky seatube gusset things, or a decent strength chainstay.
