Split Links

Okay, I assume you have this type of link:

Don't use it, it's bullcock, the little doo daah pings off because it gets knocked off by the cogs on the cassette (hapened to me, it sucks) then the chain falls apart when you're riding.

Don't use this either:

It's weak.

What you want to use is them lil' bitches that you have to bend slightly to get on, they really are good (the BMX type ones anyway), I'va had one for 6 months, no problem except getting it off, but anyway I reccomend either not running a split link at all or running one of those links I just decribed (cant find a pic sorry).

You shouldn't be running a split link with gears - theyre not designed for it.

Also make sure the clip goes on the correct way, will help it to not ping off :)

Use the split Link!!!!!!!

I have always used them and when the chain breaks it has never been that link to go. People seem to think that they can be used to remove the chain 3 times a day and then be put back on. If you remove the split link then use a new one to join the chain again and not the same split link.

I run my chain with gears and have had no problem, like adam said, if you put it on the right way then it will be sound.

Think about it in your head for a second. That link uses a sheet of metal to take the load. This is held in place with a sturdy clip, so the join between the pins and the metal doesnt really matter. If you join the chain with your chain tool, then you are pushing the pin into a bit of metal and that all thats holding it together. You and your tool cannot join the chain in the same way the factory does, so you can guarantee that the link you joined with your tool is the weakest link in the chain.

Use the split link :) Please

EDIT: adam, all you have to do is space the jockey wheels out with washers and longer bolts.

Id reccomend using it, unless there is very little space inbetween your cogs.

I have broken 3 KMCs when i rode stock and wasnt using split links- this may well have been just bad luck, or from the join where you put the chain together using a chain tool being slightly weaker than the rest, like JIX said.

Since Ive been running a KMC with a split link on singlespeed I have had no problems whatsoever- best chain I have ever used by far!

If it's that type of link or the other split llink, either way i'd say don't use it because there weaker. You want the strongest possible because if it goes and most chains do at some point because trials puts so much tension and strain on them, it's gonna hurt.

Just imagine a 4 ft or higher dropp off, SNAP  Face plant drop off!!

Use it.

I'm always taking my chain on and off, different ratios etc, and I have more faith in using the splitlink, than constantly splitting and joining the chain. As long as its the kool type of splitlink and not the other type mentioned it is perfectly fine.

Aimed at little harry.

What are you basing your "there weaker" statement on??? A chain joined with your tool at home will be the weakest link in a chain full of properly joined links. Or do you think you can join a chain with your tool as well as the factory can?? And that when the chain breaks that it wont be the one you joined??

Im not to bothered because I will always use the kool link and be sound. For som reason it just annoys me when people think they can join a chain as well as the factory.

For me, it goes like this. Get new chain, use tool to shorten to correct length. Put on bike, and join using split link assembled in the right direction.

If I have to remove the chain for whatever reason. Off comes the split link, and when re assembled I will use a new split link.
