SQuiT-man
Hi, my new zona frames just came through the post and looks sweet, but I need a new headset for it- I was considering this, as I want to save a few grams wherever I can while building up my new spec: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/American-Classic-Ahe...1QQcmdZViewItem Which I believe ways something like 77grams for the 1 1/8 inch version. Do you think it would stand up to trials? I have never broken a headset before, but dont see how I could break a headset, unless the bearings went? Does this look like it should be ok? Cheers, Scott
Mark W
Headset cups crack, and bearings die. That's largely it though. Not on that headset per se, but my brother's cracked a headset cup twice before, and I've killed bearings too.
CurtisRider
i used to have a habit of cracking pig headset bearings, and ive cracked a orbit cup, but they were all majorly old headsets i cant see the problem personally, if it breaks just claim it on warranty thing is you arent really saving that much weight, seems a bit pointless, but its up to you-personally id go for something like hope or king that are both reknowned for strength and durability
JIX
I run a stronglite head set  Never seen anyone else with one. Its good because the bearings are linear (flat) rather than round. Takes the stresses better I believe. Only problem is that it has quite a high stack, but Im ok with it. Had it ages too. Chris Cook
My mate has cranked his cane creak headset about 3 months ago and he kept riding with it and it got worse and worse since.
SQuiT-man
So you think it'll probably break? It has a weird system I think, according to the description, which is what makes it so light perhaps, but I didnt really understand it as I know nothing about headsets. Is it really worth saving up for a Hope or King? Cheers for all the replies  Scott

Get a king !!!!!!!!1  Nyar, is this true that even the hope ones break a fair bit? Was this one of the old Enduro ones or the newer XC ones? Caleb was telling me the other day that apparently the XC ones are better. I was hoping to not spend too much, I know kings can be had for around £60 on ebay, but it still seems a fair bit
CurtisRider
the majority dont have the probems with their xcs it seems, and they are backed up with the stupidly good hope warranty-so bust it and they will replace the bust bits  the enduros were a bit crap if i remember rightly personally id stick with fsa pigs, they are tough as hell (yeah i broke a few bearings but remember they were uber old and had been used with a previosly bent fork) and they are cheap! Ali C
the lower bearings in my race face duce headset all fell out  they were knackered I now have a king and love it. I personally would go for a light weigh headset, they have to take loads more beating on a trials bike. Think about it, road and mountainbikes dont put much stress through a headset, but trialsriders do pivots, taps, hooks front hops, alsorts, much more than what light weight headsets can put up with. Janson
I've been running this for about 13 months maybe.. Not a single service. Runs OK, it's not very smooth compared to a king, but I can't really tell. It's low stack, cheap as chips (5-10 quid or something) and it's black. I personally can't really see the point of a £100 headset...
Ali C
to be honest with you I dont know why I got a king, I guess it was a spur of the moment thing  I really like fsa headsets, they are brill
spangler
Ive only ever cracked on headset cup on my 20" megamo and it was a very light one the cups were plastic. Bearings i seem to have problems with the ones in my pig. Edited September 28, 2005 by spangler
Blackghostknife
When i had my pig i ripped they internals apart and bearings went in frame nd shizzle when i took forks out but then put king in and all was good :)

Stan Shaw
That American Classic headset doesn't look very tough :) But at the current price of £11, its cheap! I say Chris King, which are about £70 on ebay! or a Hope headset! Stan.
Luke Drewery
Go for the american classic if you are serious about saving weight, you should know now that saving weight in trials usually means sacrificing strength. But for £11 its very cheap, and if you keep it tight (not overtight) and keep it greased it could last you a long time. I run a cane creek headset in my t-rex (internal) and its not bad. It works, and thats enough for me. I do miss having the wide choice of normal headsets though, with internal there are only a few choices available. If i had some spare cash and I had a frame that allowed normal headsets without shitty cup adapters then I would probably buy a king for the overall quality of them, and pimpness too! :)
Mr Motivator
FSA Orbit XLII (Y) Running one for over a year now and has been in two frames. The ally cups make it super light and the sealed bearings are great! They come in many colours and for only £30 you have yourself the best/cheapest headset for trials around :- I'd never have anything else to be honest. Josephine
My mate has cranked his cane creak headset about 3 months ago and he kept riding with it and it got worse and worse since. :P Get a jubilee clip and put it around the cup and tighten it up until it's cinched it back into something resembling a cup; poblem solved  One of those :S Joe
