Mark W
Ahoy, My new TryAll rim appeared today (shiney shiney :P), and I'm gonna build it up tonight after work. I've got a DX-32 on T-Master hub at the moment, so I'd just be taping the spokes together, taking the nipples off then bangin' the TryAll over the top of the spoke, doing them up, then riding away all happy 'n' stuff. BUT. The inside diameter (ERD?) of the TryAll rim is around 350mm-ish, and my DX-32 is 360mm-ish, meanign there's a bit of a difference. However, the second layer of the TryAll is raised quite high above the outer part, like so: This makes the inside of the Try-All about the same depth as the inside of the DX-32. By that, I just mean nothing shows above the DX's inner second layer bit, so nothing should on the TryAll. With this in mind, and the fact the spokes are going to technically be too long for the TryAll, could I jsut build it with the longer spokes? They'll stick out of the top of the nipples more, but they shouldn't poke out into the inner tube chamber part (not least 'cos there'll be a f**k of a lot of rim tape on the go :)), so would it be OK? Thanks for any help, Mark
munkee
Should be fine, if they stick out too far you should be able to file them down or cut them?
Janson
if the spokes are too long there is not enough thread on the spoke for you to get good tension of the spoke.

Yeah, that's the problem I was thinking might come about... Just depends how deep my nipples are (giggles) and how far in the spokes are at the moment. Sketchy sketchy... Waynio
you deffo need shorter spokes or try cross them 4 insted of 3 if thats how its laced, iv tried at work to do it and it just doesnt swop across a dx32 is flat and a koxx rim is similar profile to a d521/ex721 rim. Waynio............................. if you relac it with same spokes and crossings make sure you have a good spoke key cos it may take you a few hours tightening them up and making the nipple cut new threads on the spokes :)
Mark W
The awesomeness that is Ad Read has sorted me out with spoke lengths, so I'm just gonna have to hope we've got some in stock tomorrow at work...
Tony Harrison
Yeah, on 26" wheels the spoke length difference is usually about 4mm. Not sure for 20" though...
Mark W
Built it up now :S Took 2 hours, including stripping down the old wheel, and serving customers in our shop. Thought I'd properly f**ked it up at one stage 'cos the spokes were looking all spaghetti-like, but it was fine. Well... I say "fine" - as long as you don't look at how much spoke is poking out the top of the nipples, leastways. Had to use 175's instead of 173's, so it was a bit lengthy. Once I'd got the spokes all equal at first (so the nipples just covered all the thread showing, if you get me), it was all buckled and egged, but then I tightened them all up a bit more (randomly on each spoke too, 'cos I kept getting distracted by people) and the wheel was almost perfectly true, and almost no sign of any egg-age. There's a slight egg-thing going on, but it's only tiny, pretty much. Almost exactly the same as my Try-All front, actually... Anyway, just got to get me some white electrical tape to get it all matching and I'll be sorted. 940g for the wheel, 1010g with rimtape in. Hands up who's shop just got some new digital scales in :)
