lankyri
me and flower were talkin about joining a two mavic D521's together running two inner tubes but 1 massive tyre would it work my question is or would the tubes just explode after a drop from the two inner walls i no fatmikes got a picture of them joined but does it work hope you can answer this question cheers ric :D
will4eva7k
now, how are you going to get a strong wheel build? 16 - 18 spokes per wheel ...err good idea but i dont think its going to last or stand the forces i meant, its not going to work i would just save the hassle buy a fat rim u will have a stronger wheel its cheaper and it will last longer Edited September 22, 2005 by will4eva7k
flower
fat rims are mad of cheese thats why i wanted to get to 521's (as there the best ) and weld them together, with a little tinkering it should work. But we have looked at all the last details yet.
Simon
Both "Ali C" and "Fatmike" have done it, PM them and they should gladly help you. As far as i know, there rims are holding up fine.

Todge
Im running a Mavic D321 on the rear. Super strong, wide enough, and theres just enough room to fit a brake pad on :D
flower
how heavy is it?
ian
yeah isnt fatmike running his tubeless? you can do it by welding them together and getting rid of the middle sidewall where you welded them together so you can just run one big tube and a big tyre
flower
its more the rim lacing and how to get rid of the side wall. I dont want to start grinding it down for example then it will splitt. so im await infomation on how to build.
ian
lace it as you would a normal wheel. if you join the rims to the spoke holes are next to each other than it hould all be good. just get longer spokes and all should be good. JIX
Dont weld them together though because I think ali said the heat made the metal reall soft and so it was no better for grinds than a try all rim. But I think Phil (select bikes) said there was a method of hardening the metal again which was pretty simple. Try a search on the topics because there was loads of info in them :D

Simpson
OOOooo! like the thinking but you forgot the most usefull point, if you got 1 puncture you COULD still ride lol :D
Gavin
i'm pretty sure u could harden the metal again by heating it up untill its glowing then dipping it in cold water, but i wouldnt like to mess about with it myself. have you considered one of those massive sun rims? their huge, rather strong, and they come in a lime green colour! cant remember the name of them though. i'll edit tis post when i find out

lankyri
not really appart from front brake needs bleeding bout it though, bikes running really smooth for once i love it
Ali C
I did indeed do it. I removed the inner walls and got them welded, Fatmike kept the walls inplace and ran bolts though it, solves all the problems of heat, but is heavier. I dont think its really worth doing, not when the new echo rim is comming out, 48mm wide and supost to be as hard as alex rims, so should hold grinds better than current wide rims. I also used a sun doublewide, they are pretty decent, holds grinds really well, but the angled braking suface can be a pain for setting pads up with, I also flat spotted mine really easily, but it did have big holes in it. lankyri
sounds good ali but flower wont want a grind hes a proper street prankster lol but thanks for everyone helping out :)
Danno
Fatmike did it with a Mavic 717 and 719 and originally bolted it together with 8 3 or 4mm bolts, however this didn´t work too well as the rims tried to pull apart from each other under the stress of riding. Therefore he used another 8 bolts, so a total of 16 bolts and it seems to work fine at the moment. It is fairly straight forward to do, but does take a while. It is something different though and you do get the main benefit of amazing brakes due to a decent grind because of the material being alot harder then echo/koxx/onza rims etc. However it is heavy, but I think Mike plans on going tubeless to save weight as he has to use a DH tube to avoid getting flats easily. Hope this helps, Dan.
Dan-Walker
Arnt the d521 rims 27 mm wide, it is going to be f***ing wide 54 mm and pretty heavy to the rims i think are about 600 grams each so will be a heavy, 1200 grams.
