Heatsink
Hi there, My advice would be to just keep your eyes open in your local area for cars up for private sale. You can check these out and see what you're getting for your money without any long wasted journies. After getting a few ideas you could browse the local paper's private sale ads with a few cars in mind. Once you have a few candidate cars & their models, be sure to phone up a cheapish insurer like Tesco or Elephant.co.uk (you could play around with the online quote generator trying different cars) to check out the cost of it for your insurance. This is pretty damn important since it can go through the roof if you choose a car which statistically has been handed down from Grandma to a boy racer and so is being involved in crashes the length and breadth of the country. For example, Mk II G reg Golf GTI (over 10 years old) sale value £500 and I was quoted over £2000 insurance even though I'm over 25. The vast majority of these cars have fallen into the hands of the barry boys. For under £1000 having a long running MOT and road tax (as close to 12 months as possible) is a key thing to go for. Never do what I did and buy a car which is about to need an MOT. When the MOT comes around, a car worth under a grand could cost you 50% of the cars value to keep it on the road, and maybe more! If you look around you could pick up a decent car for £500 which is mechanically in great order. Just take your time to side step the numerous old bangers about to die on you. Definately take a knowledgeable relative along with you, an experienced car buyer who knows what to look for, and be prepared to walk away. Steve have done but doesnt really help a person really if they dont actaully know what they are looking for. searched for cars under a grand came back with loads but havnt got a clue about half of them. thats why im asking for peoples help. Pork Pie
Same boat as you Whiteboy. Really doesn't seem like I'll be able to afford the whole owning a car thing, but it'd make life so much easier, so it's worth looking into I guess. It seems like the main bank breaker'll be insurance. What's a realistic prediction on a 1litremajobby gonna be do you reckon? Or is it really individual? I've heard just small differences in post codes can make a big difference? Any 1l notsoboyracerish car drivers here? What insurance are you paying and what car you driving? Also, how much of a difference to the insurance price can taking your pass plus make? Any ingenious ways of making insurance cheaper? Oh yeah, whats the disadvantages of being put on your parents insurance? Obviously an advantage is that insurance is made cheaper? Sorry 'bout all the questions by the way. Tell me to fook off if you want. Ta.

Richie
with insurance is it £1000 per month or per year?, if its per year do you pay it all in one lump or spread it out over the year? Ben Lol, well its a year i hope lol, nah its yearly, you would need to pay the lump sum, but you could get your folks to take it on and then you can pay monthly, monthly is like you pay say 200 deposit then you pay like 80 a month after that for 10 months. As for the car well i'm doing my 2nd lesson tonight and im taking my theory on the 30th and im going for a 306 or a corsa ive got 800 quid :) Hope i helped Richie. Bucky
get an astra van. can get Mk3s for liek £300 or mk4s for £2000. most of them are diesels and some are turbos also escort vans are pretty cool. get a van you'll love it and so will your missus :)" think the smallest is a 1.4 for a petrol astra van and escort vans were all diesel i think. but still if you get a non turbo astra van ill be well cheap for you to insure. i got added to my dads policy for £500 (and ive got 9 pointsand a Ban at only 18) Edited September 20, 2005 by Bucky

My 306, 1.4, 95 reg would be atleast 1500, and ranged all the way up to 3000. I'm going under my dads though, so it's all good. Nice cars though, i love mine. :) I would go for a Fiat Punto, Fiat Panda or Ford Escort, or something along those. You only wan't a shitter as your first car. I wanted, and got a 306 for some petty reasons, amongst them i really wanted one, but i would advise against it, its a boy racer car. :D

I was insured with CIS for a while and they had the option of monthly instalments (although that was slightly more expensive). Fuse
Oh yeah, whats the disadvantages of being put on your parents insurance? Obviously an advantage is that insurance is made cheaper? Well, if you're going to be the person driving the car the majority of the time, then technically it isn't legal. Realistically, nothing can be proven, and loads of people do it when they first pass due to the much lower insurance cost. The other disadvantage is that you can't build up a no claims discount whilst you're driving under someone elses insurance. It can be so hideously expensive to have your own insurance for the first couple of years though, that it's often best to be on your parents first and take out your own policy a few years down the line. For the record, ive seen loads of men driving these cars  But they are actually quite nifty. Plus only group 2 insurance. My insurance is £981 with Pass Plus. I don't think that there are many cheap KA's though. Anyway, if you don't like my idea, then a 306 is good for a 1st car. I'm with Zurich. The other quotes were around £2000. It's still alot I know but I am 17yrs old. The only reason im with zurich is because my dad's friend kind of works for them and he said they are the best for sorting out no claims, plus they are really efficient. If you are going to insure a car, then I wouldn't do it with Tesco, because they are rubbish when it comes to your no claims. I've been told by so many people. And that's charlotte's tip for today! If it is 3rd party you are getting rapped, if its fully comp its not that bad. Another piece of useless information for you, Tesco insurance is actually run by Greenflag. Village Idiot
I dunno whether you've tried this yet but give it a shot... Instead of taking the policy out in your mam/dads name and putting you on as second driver, take out the policy in your name with your mam as second driver. This saved me between 150-200 quid on my insurance and it still lets you build up your no claims as your the policy holder. I dunno why this works. The only reason I can think of is that if there is more than 1 driver on the policy the driving will be split between the 2 people so effectively you are less of a risk with another driver on the policy (as it is not you doing all the driving), thus making it cheaper. I'm not sure whether it will work with all companies. When your getting quotes make sure you check what your excess is. Most policies seem to add on young driver excess (could be up to £400 with some companies) which is compulsory if you make a claim.

Yeah I was thinking that!! Erm. I'm looking at a first car around now too. I'm 17 in November, so I want something nice once I've passed my test. I'm looking at: Focus's (1.6 insurance group 6) Saxo 1..4 West Coast or Furio, which aren't too bad at all. A 1.4 Clio maybe. I was looking at a 1.6l Mk 2 golf today. Insurance group 11 haha. £4850 quote was the cheapest for the GTi, 2 and a half k for the 1.6. Fun fun fun.

that NBR dude
If you can find one for a decent price, which is difficult these days, look around at a few minis. They go like stink, you can be as hard as you want with them, yet they are still one of the cheapest cars to insure. I have an 1100cc Estate, so I can fit 2 bikes in the back, with alloy wheels, stage one kit fitted ect ect, and my insurance is £977 fully comp. Have a look through www.adtrader.co.uk for used cars in your area. When looking at cars, always check their insurance group. Just because they are a 1.0l doesnt mean they will be cheap. My 1.9 diesel fiesta was insurance group 2, when a petrol 1.0l fiesta was insurance group 4. Also, dont buy a van. Vans are covered under comercial insurance, which is significantly more than normal insurance, and things like fiesta/corsa vans offer no additional space over a standard hatch, with the disadvantage of having no rear seats. My other top tip when it comes to insurance, is buy an auto-trader, go to the back, and phone up the insurance companies with the smallest most pathetic adds. These small companies arent run by the government, so have lower premiums. Places like Norwich union, More than, Direct line are all government funded, so to get their money back, they have higher premiums. Also, avoid places that say "specialise in young drivers" as these just lure you into a false sence of security. You think they will be cheaper when in actual fact thay are a great deal more than others. Prime exapmle, "Hyperformance" specialise in 17-25yr olds, offering low insurance. Quote on my mini was £2700 TPFT, one of the highest quotes I got.
