Get 5mm allen key - Loosen stem bolts (so it's loose on the steerer) - Do up top cap, with reasonable force but not hanging off the end of the allen key - Do stem bolts back up - Check it's tight but turns freely.

Is how you should do it, it's hard to tell what you did from your description.

Ask someone who knows what they're doing to help.

yeah will do ill get some help tomorro.i just did it up so tight it clicked and didnt really know if i was damaging anything so i stopped ;)
