My King

Hey, i recently bought a second hand king classic wheel from ebay, and it has been fine but lately it has been sounding different and skipped on me badly once which ended up in me going over the bars (wasnt hurt thankfully). Anyway, when i first got the hub it was very loud and after a few rides i decided to take a look at the internals and give them a clean. I cleaned the driveshell and re-lubed it with thin scooter oil (10w, as it says in the manual) between the splines. When i fitted it back together it was virtually silent when i rolled slowly and still quiet when i rode fast. It had a few little minor slips too when i applied light pressure to the pedals and i knew something wasnt right. I took it apart again and the cleaned the driveshell so it had minimal lubricant on it and cleaned the whole ringdrive system too then fitted it bak together. It is still very quiet and i know somethongs not right, i know when you run them with minmal lube they should be loud. The hub is fitted together properly, the driveshell clicked into place peroperly, i tightened the cones adequately, tightened the end cap up etc and somethings still a miss. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is wrong/needs doing to my hub?

Send to fatmike (i think thats who services them? :- ) and get it serviced (Y)

Might just be a little error which you might not be able to see but i pro will?

Thats what i was thinking but no wheel means no riding, i wanted to see if there is anything that i can do before i send it off.

Yeah tart'll sort it out a goodun :(

also to do with king hubs.....on mine i have 4 cogs on the driveshell - the 1 i use is a king kog and the other 3 are acting as spacers, is this ok for the driveshell, should i bother replacing with proper spacers/a cassette?

Cheers.

Noz.

Right heres what to do.

you gone need some clean and dust free clothes, and a toothbrush and a bit of wd 40(or very thin oil).

Right now strip it down and completly clean the internals, any thing that is part of the freewheel has to be 100 % clean, use the toothbrush to get at the internal splines.

now its entirely grease free, apply a tiny bit of WD 40(a dribble, just lightly touch the top till its about to drip) on to the splines on the cassette body,

Then reassemble. :(

The hub will now be really loud and should stop skipping.

Things to make sure are:

That the hub is 100% cleanand free of grease before appling the wd40 to the cassette body splines.

And only use a TINY AMOUNT OF GREASE. TINY!

You could also have a go at stretching the spring a bit. But that's dodgy stuff if you bend it out of line though. Don't want it getting all f**karooned and wonking up inside the shell. Most people I know have stretched the spring in theirs though without too many problems, me included. My King has NEVER skipped by the way.

When it's silent it probably means that thewre is too much grease/ too thick, probab;y will mean bedding it in again. a 20 mile round XC journey should do the trick.

whats that going to do? none of the oil is going to come out because the hub is sealed! just need to read my post and do it

i take mine apart, spray in a fair bit of wd40, wipe, spray, wipe (now the innards are fairly clean), more wd40 on the driverings, toothbrush the splines on driveshell, wd40/finishline them up, bit of finishline on the needle bearing, put together and voila.

The thing is, when a King skips, it completely destroys the Ringdrive on that/those splines. Now if it keeps skipping, then its only gonna get worse. You need a new ringdrive, otherwise your going to have an early grave.

Then, when you get the new Ringdrive(if you're smart you will) you'll have the joys of bedding it in. I think its something like 100 miles, o something similar.

Also dont jab at the hub when you gap. Push against the pedals, because that way it'll grip on the Ringdrive, rather than trying to and missing. The more pressure applied on the Ringdrive, the more it'll grip. If you jab at it, it wont grip, they'll be no pressure on it, and it'll miss gripping together, throughing you off your bike.

It doesnt keep skipping, it skipped badly once and only about three times minor little slips which was due to me putting too much oil into it. I have done what janson suggested and cleaned and lubed my hub with wd40. I went out for a pretty long ride last night (had to ride quite far to get to the spot) and it didnt skip even minorly, not one little slip. Its also quite loud again. Im sorted now, cheers for everyones help on this matter, i appreciate it. :'(
